1 Attachment(s) Hi I am new to the puppy training too. Zoey is 14 weeks and we have been doing the pee pad thing too....She is doing well with it. I only still let her have very supervized time runnning in the house. I have a open play pen area set up for her with her bed, blankets, toys, pee pee pads. I guess you have to watch him for signs, Zoey is very easy to tell if she is gonna go. I then pick her up and put her in her area and she goes. I now leave the play pen area open and she is starting to run in there to go. ( Well last nite she did today may be a different story) I guess from what I am learning is it takes patience and time. I am not bringing her outside yet it is too cold and she is quite small. There are lots of great people here I am sure you will get lots of help. Keep Smiling and good luck... |
Potty Training I am having the same problem. When my Yorkie, Chloe, is confined behind a doggy gate, she'll pee on the pad. However, when I let her run around our house, she pees everywhere! She did learn how to pee outside, but she has such a small bladder, she has to go pee almost every 2 hours! When she pees on the carpet in our house she runs and hides behind the couch or under our bed, because she knows she's in trouble. She's 7 months old right now and I'm having a hard time...I don't know what to do!!! |
romeo is trained now. back in his early days i used to put a special spray on the wee wee pads to attract him. the stuff already on there wasn't enough. what really helped him was hanging out with other trained yorkies. he copied their behavior. so actually was was trained by yorkies! |
I'm having the same problem with my husband... opps! I mean Jewel. She is 3 years old, knows where she is expected to go but unless I tell her to go, she will go where ever she pleases.... My Jazzie who is 8 is very very good about using the piddle pad. In the beginning, she would put her front paws on the pad and miss the paper all together! Bless her little heart! She though she was doing so good and I couldn't correct her. So I got a litter pan and put the pad in it so she has to jump in to use the potty. |
Pee Pads Hi! I tried using that spray stuff, and it smelled sooo bad! It didn't seem like it worked for her. We have an adult Teacup Chihuahua who never misses the pad. We thought he would set a good example for her, but she doesn't seem to follow. All I can do is get up every 2 hours to take her outside...which is really hard, because I have to do homework and cook, etc...after I get home from work. I've tried yelling at her and spraying her with water, but she just runs and hides. I'm not sure if she understands what she's doing wrong. |

I took her to her puppy class and I asked the instructor what to do. She suggested leashing her and "tie" her to your pants or a chair leg. Basically, she's within a foot or two of my reach. If she's squatting, we'd scoop her up immediately and take her to her confined, designated spott for her "business". It's been working very well! Not only she bonded better with us (now she's more likely to hang out where we hang out instead of running off like a mad woman), we learned her habits as well. As for getting things out of her mouth, try this. When you have her in your lap or arms and she doesn't have anything in her mouth, just put your fingers in around her gum, her teech. Pry it open, while say, "open". Praise her when she does it. Maybe she'd get more use to your fingers in her mouth. Give those a shot. Good luck. Kathy |

Yoshi is about 5 1/2 months now and 95% trained to go outside only. I started him off with pads because I couldn't be there all the time, and I found that those puppy training sprays worked really well for him. However, the first few months whenever I was at home he was either confined to a small area (my bathroom) or he walked around with me practically taped to his back. At first he LOVED to go on the carpet. He far preferred it to anything else. I think the key is consistency and awareness. As soon as he would start going, I'd pick him up and plop him outside (or onto a pad, in your case), and then praise him everytime he did it outside. For the longest time I thought what I was doing wasn't making any difference to him, but eventually you will realize that he is making mistakes less and less, and you can watch him less and less all the time. As for the drop it thing, Yoshi is really bad about that, and I've only just realized lately that the only time I tell him to drop something is when he's in trouble, so I've started doing it when we're playing with his toys and having a good time. I expect this to work as well, but what is important is recognizing things we are doing to either enforce or deter a habit of theirs. And then really only time and consistency helps. Take care |
potty training I just purchased a 8 week old yorkie she is doing very well with the potty pads going pee but will not poo on them I have tried putting it on there to attrack the smell but this doesn't seem to help. She would much rather poo on my wood floor or try to find a rug. Any suggestions?? |
I don't know waht to do with Man-Tou too! He's 4 months old. He pees in the wee pad when i'm home, even when i let him roam free. But when he's alone with Bambi at home, even if i confine them in a large ex-pen, he would sometimes pee in the pad, and always pee at least once right outside of the wee pad. btw, he also loves to shred the pad...sigh. |

Hello, How did you train him to go to the pad even when he is roaming free . Royce when he is home alone and gated he goes to the pad and when I put him on the pad and say pee pee he does it but when he is roaming free he pees on the carpet, he doesnt make the connection and go pee on the pad . thank you, |
I suspect he tries to please me when he's in front of me. But when i'm not there, he would just do whatever he feels like, be lazy, or purposely pee outside the pad. That's my problem...=( |
Hi Lots of different potty advice available on other threads if you do a search for Potty training. My Shelby is totally wee pad trained and has been for several months. She is almost 11 months old. If you have a young pup don't expect too much too soon. For wee pad training I suggest using an ex pen or some type of enclosure that will limit the space they can run free. When you catch them going in the right place give them a little piece of a treat and make a big exciting hoopla out of it saying "good potty" or something so they know what they did right. When you see them make a mistake (miss) say nothing and clean up immediately. (get rid of the odor or they will go back to that place to potty) Once you see them using their wee pad most of the time, give them a little more free space and see if they run back to the pad. If not, they aren't ready for free space yet. Any type of potty training takes patience but I found wee pad training to be pretty easy. Shelby was about 95% trained at around 5 months. Now she RUNS to her wee pad (one upstairs, one down) if she needs to go. If they shred pads it may be the brand you are using or they may need one of those holders. Some people have to resort to cloth pads (washable). Good luck |

Thank you for your advice . Here is the thing : my kitchen is small and I placed Royce's bed and pee pad there so obviously I can confine him all the time to the kitchen because it's too small for him to run and play...so I have to let him roam free in my one bedroom apartment in order for him toplay and run and he doesnt understand that he has to goto his pee pad to pee, I either haveto bring him myself to thepad and say the pee command and he will do it , otherwise he will pee on the carpet . This isvery frustrating . |
