HELP! Good news and bad news  We finally got a doggie door put up for the two dogs. (I can't emphasize finally enough) Anyway it's up and now I have to train Starsky and Haggis (beagle) to go through it. I have put a treat on either side to get them to come in or go out. Starsky has figured the go out part but not the coming in. Haggis doesn't want anything to do with it!! Got any suggestions anybody?? |

Took my girl a while to find it and then got out not in. Try training in and out at supper time with a bowl full of food. Only do it one or tow piecies at a time along with some extra special treat like chicken or cheese. Joy |
It took our girls a couple of weeks to get totally used to ours...we started out by taping up the heavier flap and taping up a light towel, like a hand towel and showed them how to use it with that first with lots of praise and treats....once they have done that well for several days we put up a heavier towel and used that and just build up until they were 100% comfortable with the flap. Now they use it great with no problems, but it was a slow start...they were both scared of it!!! |
I have thought about getting one too, but one thing concerns me. Do you have problems with critters, vermon or other creepy crawly things coming in through the doggy door? :animal36 |
wow you guys!! Starksy is already going in and out the doggie door with no problems. Haggis on the other hand is totally petrified!!! He will not go near it. I figure it will take time for him and he will soon be jealous that Starsky is going in and out when ever he wants. I want to leave the doggie door open when I go to work tomorrow, but I worry that one of them will go out and not remember how to come in. I think I'll keep it shut until I feel they are both comfortable going in and out. |
Yeah, I'd probably keep it shut until both of them are comfortable with it, too. I bet Haggis will follow Starsky's lead before too long. To speed up the process, you could try this. First, tape open the flap. Start rewarding Haggis for going any where near it (even just in the same room, if need be). Good dog! You are so brave! Here's your treat! Gradually work him up to going all the way up to it for his praise and treat. Then through it. That might take a REALLY good treat - like a small bit of cheese or leftover meat. Repeat many times with the flap taped open. Then try it with a towel for the flap (as described above). Then progress to the real flap. Good luck! |
When we first put in the doggie door I would be on the inside pushing them out and my hubby on the outside pushing them back in. It only took a few times at doing this and they all got the hang of it. |

Just wait until they hear something outside and want to check it out! Their nosey-ness will get the better of them! :p |
