Training Time?
 

How long did it take you to train your Yorkie to use the litter box and also to ring the bell to signal he has to go outside? I started training my 8 month old to do this like 2 weeks ago but he still hasn't gotten the point. Do you think he will ever learn?

yes he will learn , just give it time and be consistant with him..

OK I will be patient. It did take him a while to learn how to sit so I guess he is just a slow learner.

no i doubt he is slow, just keep at it and in no time, bam he will know everything.... when he does it right,, praise him till no end

I practice the sitting everyday and when he does it he gets treats and I praise him alot. So as soon as he learns the potty and bell I will definitely give him lots of praise and treats too.

lexi know pretty much everything except to come.. im working on that right now, using cheerios,, when i say lexi come she runs like a mad dog.. i think she finally got it, but i have to do it like on the beach or something cause the last time, she just bolted on me... she really has to get this one...its been like a week now, everyday i do this...

As far as learning to ring the bell, I'd think he'll learn pretty quick. I personally have never trained a dog to use a litter box. I've read, though, that older pups, who haven't used one before, may be VERY difficult to litter box train.

I have been thinking it would be a good idea litterbox to train Lebron.. How do you do that?? Also I think the bell is a good idea also. Please help!!

I tried the litter one time and all mine seemed to eat the balled up news paper that came with the kit. So I stopped using it and went to the washable pee pads.
I have never tried the bell but sounds good from what I have heard. :)

I saw the dog litter box on Petsmart. There was also dog litter available, too. This may seem like a dumb question, but do you also use the dog litter in conjunction with the dog litter box? I was just wondering if the litter was necessary.

Yes, you do use the litter in conjunction with the litter box. Unfortunately my dog eats the litter. I have read others just use newspaper or wee pads in the box as well.

At what age should they know sit, stay. come...I am working with Zoey who is 13 wks and with us only 1 1/2 wks, she thinks its fun and dances when I say sit...I guess I just keep working on it ??? When should they be doing all that stuff ??

Are you trying to train for the litter box and to go outside at the same time? If so that has to be confusing for a dog and would seem to complicate training.

I'm sure all dogs are different, but the day I brought Oliver home I plopped him in the litter box (I used cat litter... I'm not sure if that may be the reason he won't eat it) and I just waited until he went pee. At that time he was mostly sleeping, eating, and peeing (7 weeks) so every 30 minutes or so I would do the routine.... Plop and wait. Plop and wait. Needless to say, this was time consuming and hard sometimes. Because he sleeps in a crate in the bathroom with his litter box he was able to (eventually) wake up when needed and use the box. After I noticed him doing it on his own I would just praise him and give him a treat, or play fetch with him. At about 3 months he had learned where the litter box was in the house (upstairs.... in the bathroom) and one day (about three weeks ago so he was a little over 3 months) he just decided to run upstairs and use the litter box. I was so amazed and so proud. We let him roam freely around the house now. He is almost 4 months old and since that AMAZING day three weeks ago he has only had one accident. I'm not sure why or how he learned so fast-- it has a lot to do with consistancy in the beginning! It's tough- but I'd love to know what works for you!

With Sassi-she stays in a childs portable playpen during the day which has her litter box, food, bedding and toys. She goes in there fine during the day. When we are home together, I have to gate her off in the kitchen with her other box and stay with her until she goes and praise her and treat her. She has a problem when she is outside in the living room and dining room playing-she just goes in the dining room and does her business. If she does that I put her in the bathroom on "time out". She is 6 1/2 mos old and I have had her for 4 mos-are there any other suggestions out there or is patience truly a verture?
