Is my yorkie forgetful or just too young? Hi everyone, I am new to the community and so happy to have everyone's helpful advice. I have a new yorkie that is only 9 weeks old. I have been training her on the potty pads in the bathroom, which is where I leave her whenever I can't watch her. Somedays, I am so impressed that she goes over to her potty pad all by herself and does her buisness...which I always follow with lots of praise...but then the next day she will go all over the carpet. One day she is an angel and the next I feel like all I am doing is cleaning up after her. Everytime I catch her starting to go on the carpet I pick her up and take her to the potty pad but then she won't pee...ugh!!! I don't understand how she selectively choses when to pee on her potty pad and when the carpet is just fine. Is she just too young to get this down yet??? I have read in a few places that I should not expect her to be trained before 6 months, is it just because she is too young to get? Thank you! |
She's still way too young to be completely potty trained! If anything, I'd be thrilled that she uses the pad on her own at all! These are tiny pups and they have very small, hard to control bladders..... My pup is about 6 months and we'll still have accidents  Sounds to me like you're doing it right. Just be consistent with your training and lavish her with praise when she goes where she should, she'll figure it out! |
Welcome to YT. I agreed 9 weeks still very young to be 100% potty trained. I think if she is using the pads at all is good. When you see her doing it in the carpet, grab her and take her to the pad. Be patience and consistent. |
I think that you have to keep in mind also that it's hard for her to tell the difference between the potty pad and the carpet.. They are both soft on the feet. You see? She's young and she's feeling something soft on her little feet.. Must be the potty pad in her mind.. It takes time, just be patient. |
Thanks for the encouragement. I kept reading about the best ways to train you puppy was not to let them have mistakes...ha! I'm trying my best but this little puppy is still peeing. At least she has her good days! And she is so cute that I somehow have endless patience with her. |
Young puppies have immature bladders - just like non fur kids. Patience, not scolding and put down more pads if you have to. You want her to get the idea to use the pad. Many folks start out with puppies and cover the entire area and then less and less coverage, and they will go to the pad when there is just one pad in the area. Just keep trying and be patient, just a baby! It will pay off in the long run. |
