Urinating On Rug My yorkie, who is 8 months old is paper trained. When I got him from the breeder he was so good at this. He would always go potty on the newspapers. Now for some reason he is urinating on the rug in the living room. He has done this for a couple of days now. What should I do to stop this? Is it possible that they forget to use the paper? I am a new yorkie owner so any advice is appreciated. Thanks. |
Hi Does he urinate anywhere else in the house? When you take him out does he constantly have to "mark" things ie wee up every single lamp post? If he is doing this he is marking his territory and if the problem is really bad having him neutered will stop this. If this is not the case when he has wet on the rug do you spray the spot with a cleaner which gets rid of all the scent? as if you don't do this the dog will keep going back to the same spot and weeing. Hope this helps Sharon,Charley & Melody xx |
I had this same problem with my kitchen rugs.... I ended up removing them completely. After she has gotten the pad thing down and we hadn't had any accidents in a while, I slowly added them back one at time with a few days between putting a new one down. By just putting them back slowly I could be sure she wasn't going to "relapse" and start piddling on the rugs again. I'm happy to say everything went smoothly and we haven't had any problems since! |

I doesn't sound like it is he is trying to mark his territory to me if he only does a little wee when out,you would be stopping constantly if he was marking his territory ;) I think it is just down to perserverence praise him when he goes where you want him to and just give a firm "no" and move him to the newspaper when he does it on the rug. He will eventually get the message but it will take time :) Sharon,Charley & Melody xx |

Ment to say I would neuter only if it is really nessesary and by the sounds of things it isn't and I just think he would rather wee on your rug than go in the other room and wee on paper. Just keep praising him when he does do it on the paper. All yorkie's are different and learn these things at different times I wouldn't worry too much. Sharon,Charley & Melody xx |
My boy has a thing for rugs, too. Thank goodness we have wood floors and I only have a rug in the bathroom. I had to remove all my area rugs and scatter rugs from everywhere else in the house because Scout refused to stop peeing on them even though I used a very expensive spray/cleaner called Urine Off. I keep my bathroom door closed most of the time, but if that boy can get in there and pee, he will. I machine wash the rug at least every other day. Thank goodness it's machine washable! I have no idea what I would do if we had carpet!! Scout is 8 months too, and neutered, so it may not make any difference. I wish you good luck! |
Ok then I don't feel so bad being that others have the same problem. I guess Yorkies like to pee on rugs. He was pretty good today though he used the newspaper and no rugs. So there is hope yet :) |
I had this same problem a few weeks ago. Diezel is just about 10 months. I have had him since 3 months old. He never missed the pad. I decided after 7 months to get an area rug. Well that lovely cream colored shag rug came up after 1 week. He just wasn't getting it. Not sure if it was to light of a color he thought it was a huge wee pad or the texture felt like grass. But haveing a kitchen/living room combo I needed something to seperate the room. Last weekend I was in Home Depot. I picked up a plain dark gray flat rug. Not soft at all. And he has not gone once. I don't know if he even knows its there or if I am just overloading with treats. Either way I think the texture might make a difference. I think to soft and comfy was getting Diezel to excited..lol Maybe try a small harder rug for training and then upgrade. The one I got was 19.99 and its 6x8. Good luck! |

Don't think my rug is very soft because it is just a runner. It is pretty flat. I guess he just likes to pee on it but these past 2 days he hasn't had any "accidents" on it. |
