Great training hints but need different help I'm new to this site and so far it looks great; however, most of the training suggestions are for puppies. I have recently adopted a 3-year-old yorkie and am having trouble with potty training. Is there any other suggestions for older dogs or should I just keep trying the puppy hints??? I am interested in the clicking technique; which I've never heard about before. Also, I've had him (he is neutered) for about 2 months now and he attacks my other female dog (spayed), usually after I've yelled at him for doing something wrong. Is he just taking out aggression??? |
When I adopted Sandy, she was around 6-7 years old, and almost totally potty trained. I took her out every 20 minutes and she learned that was where to go potty. I also enrolled her in an adult training class where she learned to come, sit, and stay as well as walk on a leash. She has also learned a few other tricks since the class, it is a bit slower than teaching a puppy but all she wants is to please me :) I'm a big believer that you CAN teach an "old" dog new tricks, my Sandy is proof of that! :) Good luck with your new one - I'd love to see pictures!! |
Do you know anything about his history before you got him? Knowing where he comes from may answer a lot of your questions. For potty training, be consistant. It sound like you just got him so hang in there. He will get it sooner or later. If it is marking hopefully getting neutered will help. But be aware that at his age it may take up to a year for the hormones to be completely gone for his system. Getting neutered may also help with his aggression. Congrat on your new addition. I hope he will work out for you. |
