Frusterated already...training help!

 I had a Pomeranian (Roxi) a few years ago (who lives with my Mother now). Currently have a Pug (Bailey) and my new baby Yorkie, Tobey (only 1.3 lbs at 3 months) in the household. I trained Roxi & Bailey the same way. We used pee-pee pads inside a crate. We did not lock them up at night, they slept on the bed with us. When we would leave the house, (no more than 5 hours at a time at the most) we would leave them in the crate with the pads, food and toys. They both were very easy to train and consistently go in the crate on the pad to go potty. Here i am, hoping to be 3 for 3, but no luck so far. I have only had Tobey for 2 days now so i am sure i am just getting ahead of myself, but am frusterated and worried. As he is so small, it takes him a few miles (LOL) to get to the kitchen where the crate is. I can not gate off a portion of the house because the cat needs free roam to her litter box and our Pug needs to also be able to go where her crate is. Any suggestions on potty training? I'm trying here... LOL Also, Bailey seems to really like Tobey.. she watches over him and just wants to play all the time. She shares her toys amazingly too. I do get worried though because of tobey's size. sometimes i can not tell if they are just playing or if bailey is hurting him unintentionaly. Again, any suggestions? All ideas are certainly appreciated. Thanks so Much!!

P.S. i am new here, and fell in love with this site! Glad to be a member!

Welcome to Yorkie Talk... :D Being you have only had Tobey 2 days now I wouldn't expect too much too quickly. There is so much in Tobey's new world now that he wants to explore, give him time.

My only suggestion is to NOT let Tobey have free run of the house. I am not familiar with crate training mixed with the potty pad inside the crate ?? Unless of course the crate is more like a huge sized pen. If the crate is small, you might wanna take the pad out, offer a toy and blankey and take Tobey out often to the potty pad in a new designated area maybe.n I just don't think it's a good idea to have a Yorkie trained to potty where he/she lays. Again, if you had a large pen then it would be fine.

Good luck.

HI and welcome....my un-professional opione would be he is still a new baby and needs time. But, you might consider setting up several pee areas in the house as he is so small and as he grows start condensing them to one...we did that with Max as he grew and after the first month or so went from 3 areas to one.
Good luck, and WELCOME! I have found the things talked about here to be a great help.....

Oh, good deal that the crate is a big one. It should be fine then to have the pad on the other end and Toby still have room enough to sleep/play or have a snack.

The crate is a lifesaver when a pup can't be watched like a hawk.

My pup (4 month old boy) has a huge crate as well (pads/newspaper on one end), food/water along the side, rolled up fluffy blanket and toys on the other end away from the pads/newspaper).

He's in this crate when I'm at work, and he used to use the paper inside ALOT during the day while I was gone, now he hardly goes in his crate at all. When I first got him 2 months ago, I had a large area in my living room covered with paper that he could use to potty, now that he's not going as much, I've reduced the size of the potty area (paper by just a few sheets) and have moved it to my dining room.

It's getting better. When I get home in the evenings, if he wanders off, I follow him and usually he's sneaking off to potty, so I clap my hands and say in a rough voice over and over, get on that paper, get on that paper and he takes off running for the paper, then if he makes it to the paper, I give him a small treat and praise.

How long did you keep him in his crate or is he still in there when you go to work... I am concerned if i let Mocha pee in her cage she will never learn how to use paper or pee pee pads..

My dog is 11 weeks old, and I just got her on Sun. She already knows how to use the wee wee pads, she's had 4 accidents in two days. She isn't pooping on the pads yet.
I am not crate training her. She sleeps in the bed with me too.
As soon as we get up in the morning I put her on a pad, and she goes. I can never make it down three flights of stairs in time, it seems to go outside.
She does go potty outside as well.
Tonight, she was racing around the family room, and she had to go potty, so she went right over to the pad. After she did that, she came over to where I was standing, and I praised her. I didn't give her a treat, just told her how good she was for about 10 seconds. I don't think treats are always necessary after potty, but I did give them to her after she went the first few times on the pad. Now, when she poops on the wee wee pad, I'll probably give her a treat!
I would let your dog adjust to it's new surroundings. I don't think I would put the pads inside the crate, It's my inderstanding from what I've read, is that dogs don't like going potty where they eat and sleep, kind of like humans. Keep working with him, and right after he goes to the bathroom, take it either over to the pads, or outside, and maybe that will help. And remember small bladders, I take Coco outside right after she eats, otherwise she'll have an accident.

Beau is in his HUGE kennel with food/water, pads, blanket and toys from 7:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. unless my son let's him out to play with him during the day.

As soon as I get home at 5:30, he is out of the kennel and he never goes back in the kennel until I leave for work the next day. While he's out during the night before bed (he sleeps with me) and in the mornings before work, he uses the paper in the dining room to go potty, he doesn't go back in his kennel to go potty.

He only uses the paper in his kennel when he's confined in there and like I said, I come home sometimes and he's only peed once or not at all. His kennel has been clean or pretty close for a few weeks now.

training

Hi and thanks for your comments. I am crate training my new yorkie and am curious on how many pads, and where, you had them when you first began. I have two floors. We mainly all hang out on the bottom floor but sometimes I bring her upstairs (she can not climb the stairs). I would love for her to be able to sleep with us upstairs at some point (although I do not know how she will get on and off the bed to even use a pad). Where would you suggest putting pads and how many? thanks. kathy

If you have a tiled area upstairs, put the pad there. I have a really small house so when I get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, I carry Beau to his paper in the dining room and put him on the paper and tell him to go pee pee, sometimes he does and sometimes he doesn't. If he doesn't I take him back to bed with me and he goes back to sleep. He has never had an accident on my bed. If he starts whimpering during the night, I get up and take him to the paper, if he doesn't go, then I take him back to bed.

I can tell he's held it all night sometimes as when he does go at 6:00 in the morning, IT'S A LOT.
