My Yorkie is 3 and started marking in the house. Hey guys i really need your help! Tito is 3 years old and he been so good with potty training and peeing only on his pee pad or outside so far. But for past 1 month he has been peeing on my sofas feet, closet doors, bed, pretty much everywhere. I dont understand why all of sudden he started doing that. We tried stopping him and saying no but as soon as we leave the house he does it again. Or he does it at night while we are sleeping. He still pees on his pee pad aswell. He is not neutered and we dont see any difference in his behavior. He is still a happy go lucky dog and there hasn't been any new changes in the house. Please help me figure this out! - He is 3 - Not neutered - Diet is good - No behaviour changes - Pees perfectly fine in his pee pad or outside - But always marks 1 or 2 times a day on same few spots. - We cleaned those spot with enzymes remover and he still does it |
Welcome to YT. Even if you neutered him now, at the age of 3 would not stop the marking. I have a boy soon to be 8 years old, he was neutered at 8 mos old, he is outside trained on, he uses no pee pads, he has never marked in the house. 95% of the time he squats when he pees, he only hikes his leg if we go someplace he has never been to. I suggest start the re-training you did when he was a puppy, confine him to one area where his pad is when you leave him alone or when you are home and unable to keep an eye on him. Night time will be hard, if he is crate trained I would keep him in the crate. Hopefully other members with male dogs will pop in and give other suggestions. |
You need to neuter him. It’s better for his health and he won’t feel the need to mark. When you can not watch him he needs to be confined to a certain area like a play pen or crate and continue with the no. |

Also suggest getting him neutered and start the training all over again. |
I advise neutering to avoid testicular cancer down the road not as a means to stop marking or slowing it down. Marking at 3 years old has become a habit, perhaps stern NOs may help. |
I did a bit of research. They say that 60% of adult males that just start marking can be stopped by neutering and that, that should be your first thing you try after making sure the dog has no UTI. Some reasons for marking other then just the normal male stuff is some dogs will mark when anxious or stressed. So you should look to see if even the slightest thing could have caused anxiety or stress. Dogs can be very sensitive to even the slightest change. Some people will tell you to put a belly band on but that is essentially a male diaper and never actually teaches the dog to stop doing it and you could cause a rash or urine scald if not changed right away. I am slightly curious why you haven't neutered him. It's kinda cruel if not mating a dog to not get them fixed because their hormones go nuts and all they can think about it wanting to mate. They can smell a female in heat even a while away and some males will risk really really hurting themselves to get to that female. It also extends the life span of the dog as well as makes testicular cancer not possible and extremely reduces the risk of prostate cancer and a swollen prostate which can keep them from being able to urinate. |

A intact male can smell a female in heat a mile away. |
Thank you so much for the replies guys. I will get him neutered this week. I didn't know about all the health issues of not neutering. Also we have new neighbor that just moved in and they have 2 female and 2 male dogs. Maybe he is smelling them and marking. I will get him neutered asap! |
Fantastic that you will have him neutered, he will live a healthier life. If your neighbors have males and female that have not been spayed or neutered that could definitely be the reason for the sudden marking. |
