Games for the unskilled Hi all- My little Toto has the energy of a stage 4 hurricane. He goes on three, hour-long, group walks a day (with two different walkers) while I am at work, so he gets loads of playtime with other dogs. But when I am keeping him at weekends or days off I don't have a pack of hounds to tire him out. Are there any games for the unskilled owner that you guys would recommend? So far we have failed at fetch (he either won't come back with the toy or looks at it fly then back at me like 'are you going to pick that up?') and Stay only works for as long as I am visible, otherwise he gets up to see where I have gone. I am aware this is probably my own deficiency as a trainer because I have about as little patience as he does, so looking for some other ideas that might keep him occupied that don't involve feeding him like a german shephard... :-) |
Dog puzzles as well as even just training to sit, stay, shake and so on help their minds work and tire them out. |

Most terriers are not natural retrievers, hate relinquishing their prize(toy, stick, ball) as a resource to be held onto, savored, never shared. It always seemed to me giving up their prize wasn’t something they relished, in fact, detested, so I never tried training any of my terriers to go against his natural instinct to forage, find and keep any treasure/resource for and to himself. Of course they are all trained to ‘drop it’ in case they treasure something yucky or dangerous to them, but otherwise, they aren’t asked to relinquish their prize to me. Some other breeds will wear you out wanting to play retrieve all day long but never found a terrier that naturally wanted to play that game. |

Thanks all... will google for puzzles. He does like sniffing around for treasure. He doesn’t really resource guard and will just walk away non-chalantly... i think he just doesn’t care that much for non-living thing interaction unless it is food or stinky! |
