Helping new puppy adjust
 
My Tiny Toby, 4 1/2 mo. old Biewer Terrier, is only 3.5 lbs. How much does the ave. Yorkie weigh at that age? I am hoping for him to grow to average weight. This is my first Terrier--I had Maltese before. There is a lot to learn I am finding out. Things like: He was already raising leg to pee at 4 mo. This is making potty training a lot harder. He seems to think he can raise it on anything inside. My Maltese never did. Pee pads are not recognized as a potty place either. I am taking him outside and repeating "go potty" almost every hour. I give him happy sounds and a treat when he does. Then there is the problem that he is frightened by any noise. That includes especially the hair dryer!!! I have bathed him twice in the kitchen sink--with me soaked each time :), and as gently as possible tried the hand held dryer for just a little minute after as much towel drying as possible. He goes wild!! We are trying really hard to get him used to normal sounds around the house and yard.

My 6 mo old is 5 lbs. she also has an issue with my hair dryer but only when directed at her!�� She’s been groomed professionally once and the groomer said it was a “work in progress” ��. Your baby will probably become more comfortable with home sounds soon! My husband keeps telling me, she’s just a baby!❤️

I don’t know anything about Biewers but my friend who was potty training her male Yorkie wrapped and taped a potty pad around a bottle and set it on a potty pad that was on the floor. Didn’t take long for him to start lifting his lleg there. She did restrict his acess unill he got reliable with the bottle. I think she taped a pad to the wall too at first. Don’t know if that info helps you at all.

I recall one of YT members using 2 liter empty bottles covered in something, maybe newspaper or pads for her leg hiking boy or course it was in a designated area,

The bottle idea is interesting. I had been thinking if I could find a small "fire plug" and do that same thing. So far I am just trying to get him outside every 2 hrs. If I have to leave him longer than that I need something to get pee on a pad.

My little guy spent a lot of time cuddled on my lap while I watched grooming videos on YouTube. He got used to the sound of clippers and dryers and now they don’t bother him. I have also got a large dog that sheds a lot and I have the Dustbuster or the vacuum going once or twice each day. Both dogs are used to the sound and will even attempt to play with the Dustbuster.

I made it a point to grasp and gently play with their paws frequently so nail trims are no big deal.

Bon Bon never really hated baths, but as time goes by, he’s tolerating them with even less fuss. Regular toothbrushing is not popular yet, but he likes the taste of the toothpaste I use on him.

Patience, repetition, and a calm, gradual approach worked for our puppies. I didn’t expect to get a perfect bath the first few times. I was happy with a cleaner dog.
