Rain, rain... Hey all! We have a 14-wk old male puppy named Attica. We have had him for 6 weeks, and been diligent with crate/limited roaming type potty training. We were doing pretty well, only 2 pee accidents in the past two weeks, and he was consistently ringing the bell on the door to let us know he wanted to go out. Then it started raining. We live in south Texas, and other then a few 60-90 minute storms, it hasn't really rained since we got him. It's now been raining most of 3 days, and he hasnt rung the bells once. Basically, I have had to pick him up, carry him (kicking and screaming - literally) outside, deposit him int he grass, and hold him there on the leash while he whines the entire time, until he finally pees. If he gets a moment of freedom anywhere in the house other than his pen, he pees. Almost immediately. Even while eating. It means we can't play ball, tug, anything, because he will pee. Previously, we could easily play for 30 minutes followed by a trip outside without any accidents. Apparently, he hates the rain, wet paws, whatever. Any ideas for acclimating him to rain? This is making me dread winter.:confused: |

My late senior sweetie liked watching the rain, but she didn't like being in the rain. My little one, four and a half month old, has taken to dancing in her water dish, but she still seems to shy away from walking in wet grass. Our neighbor has a small dog--not a yorkie--and she has trainer her beloved to wear booties. Little Dutch hasn't taken to the booties yet. We have a patch of fake grass that sits on a tray outside, under a covered part of the patio. That is what our late sweetie used during raining (or oh-too-hot) times. Have you given the fake grass a try? |
The best thing to do would probably be to just keep going outside in the rain until he gets used to it. You could try rain coasts but I'm not sure it would do much. |
I don’t let Emma back in until she goes when it’s wet . She hurries up . They get used to it . |

You can try the booties, that has to be started now, when they are young, be consistent with putting them on him when he kicks them off, training to wear booties is not an over night thing, much patience is needed and consistency is a must. |
Be patient and give Attica time to adjust to things like this. Always keep a big smile on your face and an upbeat attitude anytime you deal with him and pottying or going outside in the rain and lots of kibble or treats at the ready. Sing or hum a happy song, be extremely positive(even though you're feeling EXACTLY opposite and stressed), keep a smile on your face through thick and thin and stay relaxed, as if the extra time and steps you're taking are the best things in the world! He'll begin to associate rain with a happy you and accept it. You can get them past a lot with a happy-acting, always positive attitude. Things you think or actually are huge problems as puppies eventually become adjusted to and a couple years down the road you can't believe how you stressed over it back when. |

I take my dog out to the same spot and repeat the same phrase rain or shine, under the picnic table while being trained. She goes there every time, rain or not. Makes cleaning up easier and she likes her private bathroom. Every time she is voiding I repeat the same phrase, Do it, do it, do it, and she goes almost immediately. Any phrase will work. Be careful not to use one used for other things. All four of my dogs do, in fact. After they are trained I can use the phrase anywhere and they go. It is so convenient on a trip or before therapy work. Good luck with your new baby. Gew |
