My yorkie Benji HATES going outside My yorkie Benji is one year old and has definitely always been on the more nervous/anxious side but this is especially true when it comes to walking outside. We’ve tried and tried to get him to like his daily walks but if we don’t stick to the same two or three blocks, he freaks! Even then, there is still this undercurrent of nervousness he emits. I’m talking pulling hard on the leash, head turning in every direction at once, doing nothing but sniff the ground for trash to pick up and eat. And the minute we get on the block of our apartment, he pulls harder than ever to make it inside. I hate our walks so much, more so for him because I know it should be different and he should be enjoying his time outside. I really don’t know what to do anymore and any advice would be more than welcome :( |
Hi, I found my Yorkie was hughly frustrating to walk until he was about a year old or so. He wanted to sniff absolutely everything and barked in fright at anything different including posters for a coming election, a new car in a driveway, people, etc. It took forever to get anywhere. He gradually acclimatised though and was fine. Our second Yorkie was no problem at all (though he over-reacts to other dogs) but I believe having the older dog with him helped. It could be that repeated slow and very calm walks may work. I wonder if treats might help too. Linda |
You might talk to your vet about anti-anxiety medication. Also, walking him in a stroller along various routes until he is accustomed to them might help as well. |
This is a situation where medical intervention seems very necessary. Talk to your vet about something for anxiety. |
