Discipline question buttons is eight months now, our problem is if he is doing something wrong we tried correcting him, moving him away from where he is, telling him no and bad boy, we've even tried a light tap with the newspaper but he will turn around right back to whatever it is over and over. how do you discipline this tiny little headstrong guy?? |
You absolutely do not tap with a newspaper ever. Do you praise him when he is doing the right things? Have you tried distracting him by playing with a toy? |
I’m agree with Lovetodream. You should reward successes and redirect failures. You never want to punish physically. Withholding reward is enough to get the point across. |
As soon as you see him doing something bad just say "No" or "Bad boy" (as you said) with the proper voice and intonation. He understands when he is doing something bad by the intonation of your voice. As soon as you show him he is not doing the right thing, grab a toy and take his attention. When he replaces doing the wrong thing with playing with his toy, say "Good boy" and give him a treat. Use a positive and polite intonation. The most important command he needs to learn first is "NO". Physical punishment usually doesn't help and it brings issues in the behavior in the future. |
Have you trained basic commands, sit, stay, come, drop it and leave it. I find the most important command is leave it. Our babies are not born knowing what is right, what is wrong. It is up to us, the fur momma's / daddy's to teach them what is acceptable, what is not. Only training will do this. The leave it command is a very useful command to stop a dog from doing what is not acceptable. At 8 months old he is very trainable. Training commands should be no more then 5 to 7 minutes throughout the day until he gets it right, once he understands and does what you ask give high value treat, praise like crazy, clap hands, make a big fuss, yorkies love to please their humans. Cheerios is a favorite with most dogs, one cheerio so he will be eager for another one and will learn commands much faster if he knows what the reward will be, if he loves his kibble you can use that as a reward treat. |
