Won't stop barking when I leave the house. Hi. Recently got a 3 years old yorkie. He previously loved in an apartment in NYC with previous owner. He now lives with me in a house in Michigan. He's the sweetest dog ever. But when I happen to leave the house, he instantly starts barking non stop. Neighbors were advising me so I could come home. Could this be separation anxiety? Any proven solution? At most he only spends 5 hours of alone time. And I leave radio on. I was letting him roam free around house but because of loud barking I have been placing him in a doggie playoennkn the basement. Hoping if he barks loudly he can't be heard outdoors. I keep reading about some collars or sprays, I don't know where to start. I don't want to place him there every time we leave. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks! Susana |
Hello and welcome to YT Probably why so many yorkie owners have a pair. :) Wish I knew the answer for you. :( |
How recently did you get your dog? He s had a big shift in living circumstances -- Everything looks, smells, and feels different-- and he may need time to adjust. We tried the dog appeasing pheromone and it didn't do much good. Others have had a lot of luck with it. |
It sounds like separation anxiety to me. But I'm also wondering how recent the change from the previous owner's home to your home is. Some dogs like the radio, some hate it. Most dogs feel more safe and comfortable in smaller cozier spaces, with their toys etc. When given the entire house, he might be freaking out a little bit, especially since he's worried about when you're coming back home. Are you able to slowly do some separation anxiety training? On the weekends, set up a monitoring camera (like a baby monitor or an app on your phone paired with an iPad or something). Then, leave for 10 minutes. Come back and reward him if he's quiet. Do slow increments, 10 minutes...20 minutes... half an hour, an hour, 2 hours and so on, rewarding each time if you noticed he's quiet. Make sure you don't act like you feel sorry for him each time you leave. Smile and say see you soon or something (that's what I say :) ). In combination with the above, you can also get some treat dispensing toys to preoccupy him while you're out. That would certainly help to keep him quiet, which is especially helpful in the beginning training stages. |
We put treats in a rolling treat dispenser. Now Sylvia can't wait for us to leave. She doesn't have the house, just the kitchen. |
