Aggressive Little Morkie Our 3 month old male Morkie "Latte" has become very aggressive the past two weeks. When ever he's getting into something he shouldn't or if we try to take something away from him, he does a deep growl and bites us. We've tried distracting him with a toy and even putting him in a time out to remove him from the situation, but nothing seems to be working. Any advise would be appreciated.:animal-pa |
This may be something called Resource Guarding. Have a read on it here: Resource Guarding Can Be a Very Serious and Dangerous Dog Behavior Issue. You will also want to establish yourself and let Latte know you are the boss, not him. To do this, do daily obedience training exercises with him. Make it fun. When I first got my babies, I used the "Nothing Is For Free" technique (Nothing in Life Is Free (NILIF) Dog Training). Basically, for anything Latte wants, he must first do something you want (i.e. sit down politely before getting his dinner etc). I still apply this everyday and highly recommend it. |
Thank you Thanks you so much for the information. After reading the article, it totally sounds like that is the issue we are having. We are definitely going to do what the article said and change our approach, plus Im going to contact a dog trainer. |
Glad to help! :) I also highly recommend that you get a clicker. I swear by it. You can teach Latte to do almost anything by clicker training and some patience. It's never to early to start doing some basic training on your own (i.e. touch, sit, down, stay, leave it, drop it, come). These are all very useful and important commands. Personally, I found Youtube to be super resourceful. I'm a fan of a Youtube channel by kikopup. I like that her videos are short, straight forward and to the point. She has many dog training videos in her channel, such as this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UCwh7_SjUVM |

Obedience training when your pup is old enough would probably be a good plan also. You could start research school now. |
I use NILIF every night at treat time. My boy goes through all his commands and tricks every night at 8 PM. Some commands are not used on a daily basis, to keep it always fresh in his head I go through everything he has been taught before he gets his treat. Consistency is a must. |
