Trying to escape from my apartment. My yorkie is the most well behaved, low energy dog I've ever come across. But for some reason, whenever the front door to my apartment is open, she makes a dash for it. She's managed to run away about five times in the two years that I've had her and you can imagine how terrified I am when that 5lb pup ignores my calls for her to come back. My boyfriend and I usually have to chase her down but I'm honestly scared that something may happen to her one of these times. What can I do to show her that's NOT okay? I have no idea why she would even want to leave. |
You MUST train her to SIT and STAY. When she is trained to sit then to stay, you MUST reinforce every day or night. It is not something once she has learned you stop. Cody goes through ALL his commands and tricks EVERY night at 8PM THEN he gets his treat. I live in a house with a front deck that I HAD to install a gate so he can not run off into the woods. I allow him out there with me when I take trash to the road, or pick up the morning paper. He has gotten use to dashing out of the door, however, when someone comes to the door he is ready to dash, I tell him to sit, then to stay, I also use hand signals for these and ALL his commands and tricks. It kills him to not be able come out but he will obey me. Your baby is NOT looking to run away from you lol, she must LOVE to go for walks, I believe that is want she wants to do, get get outdoors. Try walking her more often, this may lesson her urge to go dashing out the door. But, you MUST TRAIN SIT, and STAY. PRAISE like crazy and give treat reward when she sits or stays while you are training her. |
I took 20 minutes out of my day every day to train my dogs to sit and stay by the door with it open. My dogs are the same way. They will DASH if they get the chance to be outside. However, they now will not exit the door without my permission because I worked on them sitting and staying by the door with it open. If you are unable to train her to do this for any reason, I might consider putting a baby gate/play yard around the door. It will perhaps limit your fear that she will run out and be in danger. |
