treats?? so my puppy is about 15 weeks old and we just got him from an animal shelter. hes a morkie and was a stray and was not house trained or anything. we are working on that now.i bought him the Merrick Power Bites Chicken Recipe Treats and definitely want to start training him to sit ect ect, but how long i should be doing the training since im not sure how many treats he should be eating of those. please help me with this issue! thanks! |
I did my training of my dogs with cheerios. They are not so high in calories and the dogs love them. |
I use kibble for training rewards. You can mix it up using kibble and the higher value treats. Definitely don't want to overdo the treats and end up with a pup with a belly ache. You can also break up the treats into really small bits. Doesn't take much to make them happy. Do short training session 5 to 10 minutes a couple times a day, or have him perform a single trick here and there throughout the day. |
Beverly Courtney's series on dog training is very helpful.First two books are free on kindle. "Boo" has been thru beginners classes and learned a lot of discipline but you need to be very consistent. Yorkies (or Morkies) are not easy to train. Tiny Pieces of cooked White chicken breast work well. BilJacs "little jacs" small dog training treats chicken liver flavor are his favorite and soft so they can be broken in half. |
As Maximo stated training should be no more then 5 to 10 minutes, other wise they loose concentration. My Cody was older 2.5 yo when I rescued him. I did 5 / 10 minutes training just ONE command throughout the day, several times. I was would say with the 5 / 10 minutes throughout the day it took 45 minutes for him to get that ONE command down pat. I used his kibble for treats, Cody is VERY FOOD motivated. I just gave him less kibble when it was feeding time to make up for the kibble treats he had. The next day I taught him another command, using the same method above, again he learned that command in about the same time. Day 3 using the 5 / 10 minutes training I made him do the 2 commands he just learned. Day 4 I taught him another command. Cody is VERY SMART and learns quickly, you have a baby, all he wants to do is play so it may take longer. Start simple with SIT command. Lots of patience, treats and PRAISE like crazy, do happy dance, clap hands, they LOVE that. Let us know you his training goes. Yorkies LOVE to please us, he will work hard for that crazy PRAISING. |
