Need potty training advice!! I hope someone can help me. I feel like I have tried all of the methods and nothing works. My little one is 5 months old and about 2 1/2 lbs. I put her in her very small crate at night. Sometimes she will whine in the middle of the night and I get up and let her out and she will pee. But sometimes she will pee in her crate first and then whine! Most of the training tools use a crate because they won't soil their den but she does. Also, she will NOT poop outside no matter how long I leave her out but then she poops inside and a lot of times she also eats it. Yummy. She also poops in her bed, on the couch...anywhere. I have seen the 7 day method but I work. I don't have the option to be there all day. I've also tried the tether method but she pooped right in front of me before I realized it was happening. I do not want to pad train because I want her to go outside. My older dog goes outside and was trained at 10 weeks. Any advice before I lose my mind? |
Hi and welcome to YT :). I feel your pain, I truly do...many of us do. Personally, I think the whole "they won't soil their den" thing is a fallacy...only bc I've just never seen that to be true in my own experience, ya know? I mean, puppies go when they have to go, wherever they are at the time. Do you use rewards/treats when she goes outside...? Have you tried placing a potty pad outside (put some of her potty ON the pad so the smell is there), if she is familiar w/ them, that is...? There is a good training guide here....if you want to see if it has any info that you don't already have, PM me with your email addy and I will send it over to you immediately. :) |

I sent you my email! Yes, I do give treats when she actually goes outside but since she never poops out there she hasn't gotten the concept of getting a treat for that. Do you mean put poo on the pad and then take it out? I do usually pick it up and take it outside with her and put it in the grass and tell her that's where it goes but she just looks at me. lol I have also been trying to train with a door bell but she hasn't gotten that either. |

I meant pee -- so if you find a pee inside, use the pad to wipe some of it up so that the pad smells of her pee. It may help her outside to go near the pad. |

My Gidget is 7 mos. She lets me know when she needs to go outside. She started on the pee pads until she had her shots at 4 mos. No problem then with her peeing, etc on the pee pad. Once she learned about going outside, she will walk right past the pee pad and pee, etc on the floor. My problem is when I need to be gone for several hours--i.e. church, grocery store, hair cut, etc. I've tried the crate and she would pee, etc. in the crate. I've been researching the puppy apartment. I'm getting ready to move into a 500+ sq ft apt and need to have this under control before then. Has anyone used the puppy apartment and were you successful? I'm DESPARATE! |
