Desperate - He pees everywhere! About 4 months ago I adopted a 3 year old cute male yorkie. He wasn't really potty trained as I noticed he was marking up everything in our house. So I finally neutered him two weeks ago. I hoped this would stop his marking, but he has only been marking more this past week. I have tried to potty train him, but he seems stubborn and set in his ways. My wife is home with our 4 kids during the week and she cannot clean up after him AND take care of small kids. The kids love the dog. What's the best way to stop this behavior in a 3 year old male? Should I use belly pads or diapers on him? Should I try click training? He seems to be a smart dog, but marking stuff seems to be very though to overcome. Please help as I don't want to get rid of him. It will devastate my 6 year old. |
Sorry your going through this. Marking can be a very hard habit to break. Step one is get a good enzyme pee cleaner and make sure you clean the spots he goes very thoroughly. Step 2 I would do crate training. Treat him like a puppy, he has to stay in the crate unless some is watching him (with 100% of their attention) and give treats when he goes potty outside. I haven't tried the belly bands yet so I can't comment on them but it seems this may be a good tool to use in conjunction with crate training. Hang in there, with positive reinforcement he will catch on |

So he is now either on the leash in the house or in the crate. He still pees once a day. Any ideas on how to stop this? I don't want to get rid of him but the pee is so annoying. |
Have you tried giving him a small area, like an x-pen with potty pads? |
I have males that are my breeding stock....they mark everything! All my males wear Always Ultimate Supreme, Regular Length pads inside belly bands....these pads absorb all the pee these males squirt, and I only have to change the pads every 8-10 hours....they stay completely dry with the super absorbency of these pads, especially since they are used indoors only....and they are just "squirting" tiny little amounts in that pad.........this works great for us....of course, pads come off when they go outside, so they can pee freely......and every night when we put a new pad on for overnight, we do a good wash up of their peepee, drying them well, I put a little medicated powder in the pad, and put it back on for overnight....Been doing this routine for over 12 years, never had a problem, works great for us. |
Yorkiemom1 is a real expert in all areas of Yorkies!!! I don't have a male, but my friend does and she has done something I thought was rather clever. For indoors, she puts down several potty pads, then wraps a pad around a gallon jug she fills with water, and tapes it in place, and puts it in the middle of the pads. Her males who hike their leg use it faithfully. But again, I don't have males so I don't know if that is a universal fix. Good luck!! |
