Pee Pad Training I am having difficulty with Thumper and using the Pee Pad. He only uses it when I am not home or in the room so it is hard correct the behavior immediately. Thumper will only pee on the edge of the pad. No matter how much I cover the surface area he will go to the edge and pee. As a result most of the pee will be on the kitchen floor. Does anyone have any suggestions as how I can work with him to correct this behavior. The few times I caught him in the act I brought him to the center of the pad and said "Potty" I have used the scented spray and laid out multiple pee pads. Nothing at the moment helps. I am just tired of cleaning up pee every time I get home and wasting paper towels. |
I know how frustrating that is. Beowulf used to do this too he actually still does sometimes. Have you tried cleaning it with the pad first? That's what I did and told him "potty here" and pointed in the middle. I also got a pack of disinfecting wipes from costco cause I too got tired of using all the paper towels for his messes:rolleyes: |
I haven't tried cleaning it with the pee pad first but I will. His brother pees 99% of the time in the middle of the pad so I thought Thumper would just follow him. The frustrating thing is that I am not around when he does it so I can't correct the behavior right away. When I saw him doing it yesterday and I moved him to the middle of the pad he looked at me and walked right off the pad. He is a very stubborn dog and likes his privacy when he uses the bathroom. I am also going to try the disinfecting wipes as I am tired of constantly replacing the paper towels. Thanks for the response. |
Lol yeaa I've done that to Beowulf a couple of times (picked him up and put him in the middle of the pad) he doesn't like that either he gets confused. Maybe your dog doesn't like to pee on the same spot as your other dog? Or maybe take him to the pad every hour and place him in the middle of it and don't let him leave until he goes. That way you can correct him. |
Make sure you reward them when they do it right... Also, I was having the same issues with Charlie too and I got one of those puppy pad holders.... They are plastic and sort of provide boarders so its not as easy for them to pee off of the pee pad because they have to get on top of the holder too first. It's helped so much for me. |

I do reward them both when they do pee on the pad and I see them. I tried the pad holder. It didn't work for my boys. They would tear through it and rip the pad up. Today I tried laying paper towels at the edge of the pads and Boomer decided to tear them to shreds. Looks like I will be cleaning up pee on the kitchen floor for a while until I can figure something else out. |
