Chewing Baseboards Does anyone have any solutions for Boomer and Thumper to stop chewing the baseboards? When I installed the gate for kitchen area I needed to remove the baseboard in one section which leaves one side without a baseboard. Boomer and Thumper have started to chew parts of the splintered wood when I am not home. I have used the sour apple spray and put masking tape on the area but they just rip it off and chew away. My next thing is I am going to buy duct tape which is stronger and put it on the areas and spray it again with the sour apple. I was wondering if anyone else had any other options. They do not do it when I am around. I also leave them with plenty of other chew toys. |
I bought our second yorkie an exercise pen (iris 36" tall 8 panels) we got thru her puppyhood with just one damaged shoe! |
ohhh those little rascals, they will rip off the masking tape also and bitter apple doesn't always work, one of my girls actually liked it lol. Is there anyway you can sand that area down, make it very smooth then paint with a water base paint. It is the splintered wood edges more then likely attracting their attention and this could be very dangerous if they sallow slivers of wood, or they may be trying to get out of the room they are confined to reason they are chewing that area. My last girl at the age of 12 y/o had to be confined to the kitchen, I gated it off, she chewed through the molding trying to get out of that area. Hope one of our guy members can help you out, carpentry is man's forte lol. |
I had a puppy chew up the baseboards in the kitchen and the wall paper off the wall.....then it dawned on me to put that bad baby in an x-pen in the den, away from walls and cabinets!!! Thank goodness I had a little left on rolls of wall paper the builder had used in the kitchen and the bathroom.....I was able to repair the wall paper, and I had to replace the baseboards...there is a little area on a cabinet corner that is ruined....we could only sand it down and stained it as close as possible to the original cabinet. |
This is something that typically only puppies do while teething. Are they puppies and do they have lots of hard toys to chew that would help them get those baby teeth out? If not puppies than I would suggest an x pen, caged while you are gone or in a spare bathroom or laundry room with gates up where they can doo less damage. |

Thanks all for the advice. My apt. is too small for an x-pen as stated above and the dogs are rescues about 3-5 years old. I ended up moving their crate to cover one of the baseboards that they chew. Right now I have masking tape temporarily over the other baseboard. I ordered some foam and hard moleskin that I am going to try and cover the baseboard and see how that goes. They have plenty of chew toys but don't seem too interested in them. We start training this Saturday and hopefully the trainer can help me with some suggestions. |
Be careful of the foam, you don't want them to chew / swallow that. I have no idea what hard moleskin is lol. Keep in mind....Yorkies are very determined dogs, if an obstacle is place preventing them from doing what they want to do, they will find a way, through, around, over, under it lol, that will their goal their mission lol, yep, they are little buggers. |
Masking tape, foam, moleskin - I don't think any of that will stop them from chewing. If you removed the baseboard, what is underneath it? I thought it would be drywall but you mentioned splintered wood, which, as Joan said, could be very harmful to them. I have seen people mention Mavala Stop. It is used to stop fingernail biters but can be diluted and sprayed on the area. Or someone said putting chili powder also works. Sasha chewed the drywall on the corner all the way down to the stud. I saturate the areas with the bitter apple now and I do mean saturate. That and she loves chewing her kong now. I put some peanut butter in it for her in the morning. That gets eaten in 2 minutes but she plays with it the rest of the day. |

Have you tried a Kong ball full of peanut butter or some other tasty treats. ? Quote:
We were so desperate years ago with our Norwegian Elkhound who was literally eating our walls (drywall and panel) also the wood stares & baseboards. He even chewed a huge piece of the wood beam in our garage it was just crazy . . . We tried hot sauce and along with other training it did work. |

I would crate her when you are unable to watch her closely. She really could end up with an obstruction if she chews/eats the wrong thing. And, provide plenty of chew toys! |
I had one chew through a drywall...like a widdle mouse! When I had to leave, I connected 2 ex-pens together & left them inside the gate, away from the walls. It had their beds, water & a few safe toys. She eventually grew out of it, her cause was that she was still teething, 7 months old then. |
I have resorted to spraying jalepaneo juice or sprinkling cayenne pepper on areas I did not puppies to mess with. It has worked every time for me so far. Good luck. |
We went the X-pen route also. After having to fix a couple of baseboards. Love it now. |
