Night time training Hi! When is it reasonable to expect a puppy to be able to hold it all night? I just am not sure what to expect. Also, we have been leaving the puppy in his expen from 1130-6am and he pees on the puppy pad but poops on the floor. Any advice? Thanks! |
If I remember correctly, puppies are supposed to be able to "hold it" about 1 hour per month of age. This is a rough estimate, and all puppies are different, and you have to consider what they have been doing. If your puppy is really young, I'd say it's doing great just going pee pee on the pad. You might have luck putting another pad down in case it's one of those that prefers not to mess where it pees. Just my opinions and experience. |
My baby is almost 8 months and I still take him out for midnight potty. |
My girl is 16 months now and she still goes once (sometimes twice if we have gone to bed a little earlier) per night. We just use the pee pads by the back door and she's pretty good to use them (minus the odd miss here and there). I'm hoping she will be able to hold it all night at some point, but she doesn't have much room in that little bladder of hers so I don't mind :) |
We got Ziggy at 10 weeks old. He stayed in an ex pen during the day, but he has slept in a crate every night since we brought him home. For the first couple weeks, I'd put him in his crate around 10 or 10:30 and I'd set my alarm to wake up around 2:30 or 3 to take him out. After a couple weeks, I woke up a little later. I kept extending the time period until I was not waking up until around 7. He will wake me up if he really has to go, but that does not happen often. He had a couple of accidents in the beginning, but they were my fault for not taking him out in time. I started working again when he turned 5 months old, so he now stays in an enclosed space in the hallway without any accidents. |
