Grooming question
 
When can I expect my puppy to calm down for grooming if ever? I'm not new to grooming. My daughter has a poodle mix that I started grooming as soon as we got her at 3 months. I don't remember the poodle mix ever being as hard to keep still as Sophie who is 19 weeks. Started doing all the appropriate things as soon as we got her at 9 weeks. Running clippers over her body and so on, so she's not afraid of anything but won't be still to even brush her out. Is this normal for the Yorkie breed? Any advice would be appreciated.

Yorkie temperament is very different than that of a poodles. They are terriers! I would say to try mock grooming while she is sleepy. A puppy will be very wiggly for quite some time.

I agree with Capt Noonie. Try catching her when she is sleepy, relaxed. Start with massage and then sneak in a little combing and brushing in a soothing way. Make sure you are not pulling hair and causing discomfort. Use one hand to hold the section of hair to prevent skin pulling. Reward her for good behavior.

The other thing that helped me was to tie grooming to walks. Max was willing to put in his topknot and brush his hair to go for his walks, his favorite thing in the world.

All of our puppyhood grooming was a combo of sleepytime grooming and preparing for walks.

I had Poodles before I had yorkies, no comparison between Poodles and Yorkie, Yorkie are super hyper compared to Poodles. Follow the advise of the above members, I don't groom my pups myself, but I do brush several times a day. When I had pups it was a challenge to get them to be still long enough to get entire body brushed, I had to brush in stages lol.

:thumbup: I had to brush Teddy in stages for about 8 weeks before he'd let me put the brush or comb near him and most especially his face which, despite a HUGE improvement, he still gets sketchy about when he's in a bad/feisty mood.

I was a little bit firm with Teddy by letting him know that brushing wasn't optional (firm voice commanding him towards me when I held the brush/comb) but did result in a treat with compliance and started with a foot at a time, then a leg, then his body and then his head and finally his face. Each time he let me run the brush or comb down his fur on these parts, he would get a treat. Eventually, the time I was allowed to touch SirTeddykins was increased to his whole body and he will now actually come to me when I ask him, 'Be pretty?' :) In actual fact, he just laid down today and yawned when I started brushing him today when he would've have squealed, bit at me, snapped and whined just over a year ago!!!! Perseverance in the right way will pay off!

Don't they have that look of "I'm doing YOU a favor so be thankful...." LOL

Update! I was able to use the clippers to trim Sohphie's body and trim the skirt on both sides before she got all squirmy! I have hope! Waiting til she's tired has really helped with the brushing. Thanks everyone!
