Question about my unhouebroken adult Yorkie I am the new owner of a sweet 4 1/2 year old male Yorkie. He is a wonderful, sweet boy with one major issue. He is a leg lifter and marks and pees in the house. I take him for frequent walks and praise him each time he goes outside. My previous boy started with us as a puppy and after about a year was pee pad trained and also went outside, as well. He was a squatter. My new fella lifts his leg. We tried a big plastic bottle on a pee pad but this guy does not seem interested. I like the idea of getting a kitty litter box with high sides. Do any of you have experience training your leg lifter to use this? Any tips for training would be a big help! Thanks:confused |
What about belly bands when he is indoors? I used them with one of my yorkies years ago and I would take them off when I took him out to potty and he eventually got the point to only pee outside and stopped lifting inside. Belly bands are pretty cheap and you can even make them yourself fairly easily. |
Thanks for the suggestion! I am using them and am hopeful that Casey might get the idea to stop leg lifting in the house. How long did it take for your dog to transition away from having to use them? |
I think it was about 6 months before I was completely confident that he didn't need them anymore and that was with 100% daily use.... good luck |
I use a cat litter tray with high sides and a pee pad which is great for my leg lifter when he has to use the bathroom but it does not deter him from marking. I have used a belly band and it confused my dog i.e. made him think he should pee in it. It has not worked for marking at all. Therefore, I tether him so he can't be out of sight and/or do not allow him out of rooms without me being there or being able to see him from where I'm sat etc. Try the belly bands but don't be surprised if they don't work (but I hope they do!) and you have to try tethering for a few months. |
Thanks for all the suggestions. I am using belly bands only when we allow him to roam. I try to constantly keep a watchful eye on him when he is without the band. We take him for a lot of walks and praise him when he goes outside. I've also set up the pee pad with a big water filled bottle in the middle. The high sided litter box may be good to try, too. He's pretty smart and I hope he is catching on!:animal-pa |
My Oreo is somewhat pee pad trained except that he sometimes doesn't pee in it when not supervised. We leave him out at night and most of the time he is in his bed but sometimes he roams and ends up peeing in another location other than on the pad which we keep in his kennel. I'm thinking maybe I can use the belly bands at night. He is a squatter, but sometimes this guys does some tricks unbeknown to me. He knows to pee on his pad in the kennel but if he has peed there already, he won't go in and do number 2, but instead do it on the floor next to the kennel. I have to leave the pad halfway outside of the kennel to prevent a mess. Any thoughts? |
