Potty Training I thought some might be interested in our solution to potty training. I was getting frustrated trying the crate method and taking Gracie in and out, until I noticed her in her crate looking out the window in our patio door. It was obvious she was interested in the outdoors. We opened the side door to her crate and pushed it up against the open patio door which was blocked so it would not open further, where she could go out as she pleased, but she could not access the inside of the house. It did not take long to accomplish potty training this way. Some breeders are kind in trying to introduce puppies to puppy pads, but this tells their feet that this is the surface (substrate) they need to adapt to and trying to get them to switch to going outside on a grass surface can be a test in patience. I believe I have an article somewhere written by a vet that supports this opinion. Minniesmthr |
I'm trying to potty train my 10 month old yorkie and I can't get her to go outside. |
Potty training Could you maybe start by setting her crate outside with you close by? Where is she doing her business now? On paper or pads? Cathie |
We tried with the puppy pads and thankfully Lu started using them within hours of us getting her. Sadly though we are still using them. She's ok during the day, she goes to the door and lets us know she wants to go out. She can't hold it all night though, even though it's only from around midnight to 7:30am and she goes before bed. I guess her little bladder is just too small. We're working on it though, it'll come with time I'm sure! |
She had pee pads didn't use them much goes on carpet. I use words like let's ho pee pee and potty outside she gets excited and barks and goes to the door but when we hi out she plays then when we come in she goes on the carpet |
Tamron Have you tried daily long walks in places where other dogs have gone? Gracie likes to go where she can smell where other dogs have peed... Cathie |
Ashla I am not sure Gracie could have held it that long. Maybe 7 1/2 hours might be a bit much for little dogs. She is still getting my husband up very early a you can see by the above post. Cathie |

All in all she has no issues with letting us know when she wants to go out, which is great :) |
I've been trying that in our yard where our other dog went before she died! Thanks for the info will try that!!! |
Tamron You might want to mix things up and take her to several places where dogs go. Gracie cannot pass up a tree or a spot where other dogs have gone. When we travel, I have a hard time getting her to go in spots on the side of the road, where dogs have NEVER gone. She will go eventually, but she waits until she almost pops holding out for a "pre-annointed" place. :) I bet if you get her in the habit of going to places where other dogs have gone, eventually she will catch on. Thanks for the info I'll try that . |
