Small ball for swim training? So my Yorkies have recently discovered swimming -- there's a dog pool business in town. Jillie took to it right away and is already a great little swimmer, but Eddie is more hesitant. He needs some more motivation. The problem is, he doesn't like most rubber toys. He LOVES plush toys, but they get waterlogged. He can pick up the tiniest tennis balls outdoors, but he's a little hesitant picking them up out of the water. And he's real picky about his toys. He'll chase either a ball or a plush toy, but not much else. Not interested in ropes or those plastic fabric type of kong toys. And while Jillie loves chasing a frisbee, he's not interested. So my question: Has anyone run into a similar problem getting something small enough for their Yorkie to chase? Bonus points for pictures! |
I have a small yellow ball that floats allmy dogs love it and it has survived 3 yrs so far. It is very light weight If I have some time this weekend will post a pic of it - but right now I cant remember where I got it from. Have you looked at any of the working dog sites? |
Something like this might be perfect for Eddie if it came in a size shorter than 20". Max is like Eddie and prefers plush toys over any type of rubber toy (Kong excepted). Get Wet Toys- Doggles Online OOps, might be too much like the Kong wubba |
Another idea: the Planet Dog golf ball. It's 2 1/4 inches in diameter and squeezable, but might be too big for Eddie's mouth. It's slightly bigger than the Kong little tennis balls. Planet Dog Orbee Sport Golf Ball Dog Toy |
We have used the little sized clicker dumbbell. Alfie loves carrying it around and it floats in water. CLIX | Training Dumbbell | KPCT |
1 Attachment(s) Thanks, everybody. I'm at wit's end! Eddie is normally the toy hoarder of the family, so I thought he'd have no problem with motivation. But he just like doesn't sticking his mouth in the water and opening it wide to pick up a ball. Of the suggestions, I'm thinking the dumbbells might work. Ends sorta look like a ball and the handle is small enough to grab. Only problem is he doesn't particularly like rubber! Fortunately, Jillie LOVES getting her frisbee! And they only charge me for one dog, I think, because Eddie's not really swimming! :) |
Jillie is absolutely adorable in the water. Such determination in those eyes! Great photo. |
Hey Mike! Our Guinness would agree with Eddie... not into rubber toys but loves the plush ones! Have a look at these Pridebites toys. The only problem I see is the size- maybe too big for Eddie. I know they use to make a small goldfish which you may still be able to find online. https://youtu.be/UoG1DpVdHeg |
Jackson isn't very toy motivated in general- he's picky, but he loves fetching these, I think because they are so easy for him to grab. The little tennis balls etc are not easy to grab in the water. We use the small bumper from Chuckit. Chuckit! Amphibious Bumper, Small These are fun too http://www.chewy.com/dog/west-paw-zo...e-dog/dp/43048 |
Hi Mike , the little dumbells are not rubber they are a hard plastic, Alfie loves carrying it around but he then has a little chew on it it has weathered well and it is very lightweight and floats so all good, hope you get something that suits. Love the photo of Jillie with the frisbee. |
