Potty training my new Yorkie Poo Hello everyone. I am new to this forum and glad for the opportunity to get advice from so many people in one place. You all seem to have such valuable experience. Thank you already and in advance for what I know will come in the future. My daughter and I have had Sasha now for one month. She is a 4 month old Yorkie. She has been a joy and is on her way to being house broken. There has been the occasional accident. Either we take her out regularly or she will go to the door herself and sit waiting for us to take her out. The problem is that she will not bark or do anything to let us know she is not at the door wanting to go out. If she has snuck out of our site, she will sit for a minute or two, then give up. Sometimes she won't even go to the door. She will just squat right in front of us. I know she's only 4 months old and we still have to work with her. But, most people have to make their dogs stop barking. How do we get her to bark to let us know she wants to go out? Thanks, |
Welcome to YT. I wish I could be more help with this, but I know some people use a bell tied from a string for their pups to ring. It's wonderful that Sasha is trying to give you a signal. I wish you lots of love and happiness with her. |
I would work on getting her on a schedule, 4 months old their bladder is still small and cannot hold for long periods, perhaps if she was on a schedule and that time has come and she sees no sign of going out she may bark or whine. Take her out the first thing in the morning when you get up. The schedule MUST be the same times every day, even if she had an accident in the house take her out, she will learn the time she goes out to potty, the older she gets the longer she can wait. |
My Ziva makes a little throat clearing noise at the door- easy to miss- so I taught Abby to ring two little jingle bells tacked to the baseboard (the big overhead bells hung from the doorknob scared her) I taught her in steps- 1st we played with the bells on a string if she kicked it I gave her a treat we only played for a few cheerios a day. Then I tacked them to the wall and we continued to play once or twice a day- then I started opening the door when she kicked at the bell- It took about 10 days alltogether. It is still her favorite show off trick- I tell her to "Ring the Bell" and she runs over and gives it a good kick!( we did go outside for a lot of unproductive trips at first but 4 years later it works well) |
Hopeful and thankful Thank you for your suggestion. My daughter actually suggested the same thing but I didn't thing it would work or be loud enough. I guess she was right :). I will give his a try. Cheryl, |
Admittedly we need to do better with a consistent schedule. I didn't realize that might affect her willingness to bark, but I'll consider any solution. Thanks |
