Potty training older yorkies! Hello everyone, I'm new here! I recently adopted a female yorkie. Her name is Bella <3 she is almost a year and a half years old, when I got her the previous owners said she was puppy pad trained but now she acts like she isn't trained at all. I set puppy pads out all over an showed her where they were and I also take her outside everytime she wakes up but she still goes in the house on the floor. Any ideas on getting her fully potty trained? |

Is your goal outside potty training or potty pad only ? Unfortunately it is not as simple as "showing her where they are " .. If you want potty pad training only then I suggest you start by confining her to a smaller area when you cannot watch her every minute . An ex pen works well for this . Set it up with a her bed , toys , water dish on one side and a couple potty pads on the other . You can set her on the pad and say go potty so she knows what it is for . If you happen to see her use the pad praise her and give a treat . Also keep a pad just outside the ex pen for when she is out and about . I am not suggesting that she live in the pen it is just for when you are not there to watch her . If your goal is outside potty only then that is something altogether different . You have to take her out first thing in the morning , at least every hour , after waking from naps , after eating or drinking , . You will pick up on her queues that she has to go and when you see that immediately take her outside and tell her go potty , when she does praise her and give a treat . It is not something that will happen overnight but she will get it . If I missed something I am sure there will other suggestions to help you .. |
Thank you for the reply! I want her to go outside but when I'm not home to use the puppy pad but I don't want to confuse her. I guess going with puppy pads is my best bet for now because she has the concept of what they are for and I have a crazy work schedule so it will be easier on her. I've never puppy pad trained before but that's what she is use to. So do I keep her in the pen while I'm at work also? |

Sounds like a good plan . Yes she will fine in the ex pen while you are at work unless she is too big for a pen in which case you can gate her in the kitchen .. I forgot to ask how much she weighs . If she is a tiny Yorkie the pen should contain her as long as he is not a climber . |
Yea she is tiny. About 3 or 4 pounds. I'm gonna give it a shot. I honestly think that will work. She stays right by my side until she gets up to go the bathroom in which at that time I was taking her straight outside because I figured she was looking for a place to use the bathroom but she goes as soon as we get back in side so when she does that putting her in that area until she goes makes sense. At night she sleeps with me in my bed, what should I do a bedtime? |
I think the biggest thing about her goin outside is that it seems like she doesn't wanna be in the grass. She will jump on my leg the whole time we are outside like she wants me to pick her up that she ain't worried about finding a place to go so she does it when we get back in no matter how long we stay outside |

Well sleeping with you is a personal preference if you both are fine with it then that is great . Maybe you could keep your bedroom door closed and keep her potty pad right next to your bed in case she has to get up in the night to go . If you have a really high bed maybe get some steps for her or just something she can use to get off the bed without making a huge jump to the floor such as putting a sofa cushion by the side of the bed for a soft landing .. |
Aww 11lbs, just so much more to cuddle with :) This is my first yorkie and I was told she was a teacup but after reading up on here I realize that's not a real breed, I've been reading up on it now after seeing that on here and it scares me a little as far as health issues. Thank you so much for the advise I really hope it helps. She's such a good girl, I think I have more separation anxiety then she does when I'm at work. :) |

It is hard to leave them at home . It sounds like you have everything under control , she is lucky to have you .. |
