obedient problem Buddybear is almost 11 months old and the worst problem I have with him is coming when he's called. I've offered treats which he turns up his nose at except pistachio nuts. I know they can have a few but not that many and I cut them up in very small pieces. I feel I'm tired of bribing him. After watching the dog whisper I realized I am not the pact leader. Buddybear trusts me but that's it. He has gotten out 3 times and it was a nightmare getting hold of him plus we live near a very busy street. I've watched video from different trainers and I'm a failure. The only time he came to me without a treat was when I was very angry and spoke to him harshly. How or what have you done to be successful with this command? TIA |
Well, firstly I'd set up an arrangement of baby gates so that he couldn't get out of the door. Harry isn't 'treat orientated' at all, but he DOES love the squeaker inside the squeaky toys. I keep one of those teensy Kong Air squeaky tennis balls about my person and do a short, hard, very sharp squuuueeeeak on it along with 'come' - and he always does... He probably thinks I've got a mouse in my pocket... :D |
The "treat" has to be high value to your dog. Chicken, roast beef, cheese something that is special. Have you taken a basic obedience class? Might want to onside this! When dogs "escape" it is so thrilling for them they have a hard time focusing to come to you unless it is fairly decent strongly imbedded - why obedience classes help. (I'm sure everyone has told you to NEVER call your dog to you and then scold them.) |
[QUOTE=Harrysmum;4568196]Well, firstly I'd set up an arrangement of baby gates so that he couldn't get out of the door. Buddybear doesn't escape out of the door. He actually moved rocks from under a fence. Dh was taking out the trash and he thought he had left him in the house when he got out through the outside gate with him. I didn't place the bucket of bricks back in front of the chainlink gate where it curves next to the bottom corner. We went to puppy school and learned the basics which he passed with flying colors. He comes consistently when on the lead but off the lead is a different issue. I guess I want a quick and easy fix. |
I can relate! Sgt. Pepper is 1.5 yrs and his favorite game is keep away - from us. He also was perfect with 'come' at the obedience class. We don't have a fenced yard and are on a quiet street but we have hawks. We are working on 'come' or 'house' by taking him out dragging a leash so we can catch him when he doesn't obey. He is SLOWLY getting better. He will usually come for a treat unless there is a bird, or a squirrel, or a leaf, or... He can be such a brat - but he is a very cute brat! |
