Advice for pup that has always had free roam We adopted a 15wk old yorkie pup. She has always had free roam of the peoples home because they weren't supposed to have her and didn't want her to bark. We got her yesterday,she has a clean bill of health but I do NOT want to just give her free range in my home and so I crated her last night took her out about 11pm and got up at 5am and she had soiled her crate. I'm assuming it was all the "new" in her life so I've cleaned everything. I need some tips on how to teach her "control" since she's always just been allowed to go wherever.:confused: |
Patience, persistance, consistancy, and resolute! Be prepared for a month or longer! If it happens sooner, great! But Yorkies are stubborn....be patient! This baby is going to take time to settle in....some take to "crate training" immediately, others take a lot longer. Once you get her on a schedule of some kind, it will eventually soak in, and she will understand if she holds it a little longer she will keep her crate clean! |
Do you think I should go ahead an invest in one of the exercise pens? Would that be easiest? |
At 15 weeks she can only hold it in for 2 hours so if she's waking up in the middle of the night, she'll have to go. Yes, an exercise pen would work better. That way she has her bed and pee pads. I had to do this with my 30 weeks old pup when I first got her. She had free roam too and wasn't potty trained. Took me 2 months to potty train her to go on pee pad at night and outdoors in the day time. Every dog is different though. Most takes 7 to 12 months of age to be fully potty trained. |

I ordered a pen this morning from Amazon. While I am waiting for it. I'm using a friends jumbo pen and set it up like one of those apartments. I she her bed in a plastic tray and then she has a pee pad in the front. I was wondering how do I leave the pad in once she's wet it a couple of times or take it out. She is at least holding her poo and doing that outside. And do I feed her in there as well or do that outside the pen? |
It takes time but you will get there. I started crate training my little Ruby when i got her at 3months, we gradually introduced the crate to her by putting toys and bits of chicken inside, first week she would cry for about 20mins then quiet down, she did soil in her crate twice at first but she got the hang of it. She took to crate training really well and at 6months now is toilet trained. Your little baby will get there, just takes time and be consistent, it works out in the end ;) |
