Help!!--new puppy peeing on carpet every 5 minutes! Hi, all! We purchased a 9 wk teacup yorkie pup 1 week ago. She has been able to stay in her crate at night so far without any accidents, but we both work during the day and do not think she can hold her pee all day long by crating her so I purchased a playpen and set her crate with the door opened, food, & toys inside with the entire floor lined in potty pads except for her food bowl while we are away. After she has gone potty on her pads, we've been praising and rewarding her and when she is out with us we leave the door of her playpen open and rush her over to the pads every time we even suspect that she is pottying so that she will associate potty with the pads, but our efforts feel useless. It doesen't matter how many hours since she last ate/drank or if she went pee & poop in her playpen just 2 minutes previous--she still goes pee every few minutes when she is out with us--sometimes on our tile and sometimes on our carpet! She does not urinate nearly that frequently when she is inside her playpen (there will be around 4 pee marks after an entire 8 hr interval). I know she has a tiny developing bladder, but how is it that she cannot hold her pee longer than a few minutes versus urinating less frequently when she is penned & holding it all night when crated!!? :-/ |
It sounds more like she's marking territory rather than having to really pee. You need to clean the areas she peed on REALLY well with product that has enzymes so she won't go back to the spot. Try limiting her roaming space. As she gets older/better about peeing, you can gradually increase the space. It'd be a good idea to put several pads around her roaming area. And again, gradually take one away. Being only 9 weeks, she's still a baby so be patient. :) |

Didn't even think about this... Being so young, this is a good possibility. |
I agree with the posters above. My morkie is going on 7 months old and she finally stopped having accidents inside for the most part. You have to be patient but they'll finally get it. Most yorkies don't become fully potty trained until 6 months to 12 months. Yorkies is notorious for their stubborn potty training. Give her praises and treats when she relieve herself in the right place. 9 weeks, oh boy, you got a long way to go... Just hang in there! |
I agree with taking her to the vet. We had a shih tzu (another small breed) who would constantly urinate. We were confused by how much he always had to go. He also showed symptoms of being very lethargic and later having a seizure. Constant urination was his first symptom... It turned out he had a very severe liver shunt. So, from my experience, it's always better to check with a vet. At first our vet didn't understand fully when we were insistent on how often he was urinating and just used the "he's a puppy" excuse, but I know from my experience how helpful it would have been to know sooner. I hope your little puppy either learns how to potty correctly or you figure out any issues she may have sooner rather than later. Best wishes <3 |
Thank you so much for the comments, everyone! We have decreased the size of her playpen which has increased the likelihood that her pee will make it on the pad while we are away and give her a treat &praises when she goes potty in the right spot. I still don't feel like she's made any connection to the treats and potty pads but who knows. I've also tried to run around with her outside as much as possible and have timed it in the morning so there is time for breakfast and outside time before I go to work. I wish she went poop on a more consistent schedule so we are not following her around the house on-edge all the time, but perhaps that too will improve with time.. |

Good luck! |
Just want to say, she's only 9 weeks old and peeing every 5 minutes is really normal. As far as marking goes, they don't start marking until the hormones kick in around 8 months or older, and if she a single dog she may never mark, it's more common in boys. The YTCA recommends leaving a pup with the mother till 12 weeks and so many people do even start training till then. A good mother pup would push her over to the pee pad when she smelled urine in her bladder and she starts the training process. We keep Joey in a play pen during the day when my eyes couldn't be glued on him and at night we put him in a crate that was small enough for him not to pee to want to pee in. We took him out every couple of hours to put him on a pee pad and then put him back in his crate. They can hold their urine longer at night because the body doesn't make as much urine during the night, but they still can't hold it over a couple of hours. I think it's great you are not punishing for mistakes and rewarding success, all of the experts seem to agree on this, but I think you should only put her on the carpet when there is a pee pad close by and I wouldn't even start crating her for another month. She still too young, you're just training yourself. |
