How to use playpen correctly Hi, I have a 10 week old yorkie who is about 1.8 lbs, so still very tiny. I bought the IRIS pen and he has a bed, toys and a peepad in a holder in there along with water/food. He sleeps in a puppy apartment at night. He has been very faithful about using his potty pads. What I am wondering is how to work up to letting him out of the pen. I take him out now and we play but I'm not sure how to increase the limits and length of him being out and being able to get to the potty pad in time. Any advice ? Thank you, Kathi |
Hello, welcome to YT! I have a pup and iris pen as well. I usually let my pup out AFTER she's pooped/peed for 15/20 minutes at a time where I can keep a close eye on her. Then she goes back in her pen to rest/relieve herself since puppies usually have to use the bathroom around 30 mins after sleeping, playing, or eating. As long as you can keep an eye on your puppy you should be fine and as he becomes older you can extend the time you leave him out. |
When I got my IRIS pen (almost 4 years ago!) I got some great advise here on Yorkie Talk. Always use the door on the pen- Never lift him out over the top! We took it one step further and never look in over the top of it. Abby is a major jumper and has never figured out she can get out of the top of her pen. We do have the 36" tall 8 panel pen- best investment ever! |
