how did you teach the commands speak and quiet. If sparkle is learning tricks (so far she knows sit, lay down and come) my issue is if she wants more treats ( I home bake or give cheerios, fruits and veg) or even just because she starts barking like a feisty mad woman. How can I teach her to speak and be quiet on command? Thanks |
I use two different hand signals. For "speak" I use one or two open hands with palms facing the dog and fingers spread. And I say speak with a low voice almost like a bark myself. This has been easy to teach most of the dogs we've had. For quiet, what we eventually figured out was when Uni was barking non stop, we would hold out our pointer finger and shake it at her and say no bark, and she eventually would start a low growl instead of a bark. This eventually turned into a trick itself so now she growls on command too. |
I taught Teddy to speak by putting my fingers and thumb together on one hand and barking like a dog myself..haha. Then, I'd say SPEAK! When he imitated me, I gave him a treat. Then, after he'd learned speak, I'd command him to speak and then immediately follow that command with QUIET. He didn't know what QUIET meant so he would be quiet and I'd treat him. He caught on to QUIET after that and I use both commands with him regularly so he's got plenty of opportunity to practice! He's known SPEAK since he was about 4 months old and QUIET since about 6 months. He's a year and a half now. Good luck! |
