**Embarassed** Hi everyone, I'm really ashamed to be typing this right now, but I NEED some help. My little girl, Paprika is going to be 2 in March and she still isn't 100% potty trained. I know it is 100% our fault and we never scold her if we don't catch her (which is 95% of the time). We know she can hold it all day because the other day I stayed home really sick and she stayed in bed with me all day and I only took her out once in the morning and once really late in the afternoon and she held it. Days are not usually our problem. Our MAIN problem is at night. We usually go to bed anytime between 9 and 10:30 and we always take them out last thing before we go to bed. But every morning we wake up to yet another accident. She sleeps in our bed at night and we used to not have the problem because we would close the bedroom door and she wouldn't go in the bedroom. But we have a cat now and have to keep the bedroom door open for him so he can go use his litter box. What are any suggestions you can make that would help solve our problem? We're moving into a new house with carpet soon and this has to stop. Please, any advice would be great. |
You could start crating her at night or move the litter box to an area that the cat can still use it but Paprika can't get into it. |
No, I don't want to crate her. I love having her in the bed with me. We thought about having two litter boxes but we only have one cat and there is nowhere in the bedroom really to hide the litter box. Maybe in the new house, but not here. |

I know it helps if we take her out really late at night like 11:30 or after and we still get up early, but we both work and need to be in bed by a certain time. I'll try the no liquids thing before bedtime too. That sounds like it could help. I realize a crate would make it stop and I know it isn't cruel or anything but I just don't want to make her sleep in one. She has one but it is too small for her and I don't want her to be cramped all night. |

I've been looking into either buying her a bigger crate or an x-pen but the x-pen would have to have a cover on it because she can jump really high, so maybe a bigger crate would be a better option. For my own mental well being I'd have to put a really fluffy bed and blankie in with her. |
This is what I did, with the same exact problem. I have a cat the comes and goes in the night, so I got a gate ( actually a expandable window screen and I slide it open to fit the door) So, the cat can jump in and out.. no problem,and Bailey is NOT a jumper, so In the night when he jumps down, before he would go out in other rooms and whine, and I wouldn't hear him and he'd just find a spot and go,, Now he just sits at the gate and whines and I hear him,and I get up and we go out. He doesn't even wake up anymore he sleeps throught the night, I keep the gate up,cause I know with the cat coming and going, It would be ON, with them chasing each other, this way we ALL THREE get a good nights sleep. :thumbup: |
This would be easy for me. I'd shut the cat out and the dog in. Probably not what you're looking for though! |
I agree that a gate would be good...this will allow the cat to come and go and your little girl would stay in!! We do this when my brother brings his cat over...it works great for us!!! We just use a simple baby gate.... |

I'd put the cat's litter box up higher. The cat can get to it - the dog can't. Or put the cat's litter box in the tub. Good luck |
why dont you put a pee pee pad in the bedroom? |
I keep a pee pad or newspaper in my bathroom. At night they can get down and go when they need to. I have newspaper down in the laundry room they use during the day. They are not fully trained, I have been very lax but I have found that if I catch them doing their business on the paper and praise them for it, we have fewer accidents. Some of them are shy about me catching them so I have to wait until they are done. Lacijo is one of them and if I even look at her, she will leave the room and go somewhere she shouldn't. But if I see her coming out and start to praise her she will come to me wagging her whole little body. I'm not sure she understands so sometimes I pick her up and show her what she did and tell her what a good dog she is to go on the paper. I make a big fuss over it and anyone watching would think I'm nuts but I think it works. Sylvia |
