Puppy help I am considering buying a Yorkie right at the end of the school year, so that there will be more time for us to bond. But I'll be going back to work at the end of August. I've had a dog before and we crate trained him (Puggle), but I'm not so sure I want to crate train the Yorkie as my schedule may require me to be gone a little longer during the school year (work is kinda far from home). Can anyone give me some insight about crate training vs. playpens? I am thinking a playpen with food/water, toys, bed, and pee pads (grass scented, because I would like my puppy to be comfortable using both). My building is pet friendly, but I don't want to rely on a stranger coming into my home to take the puppy out. |
I think a play pen would be a good idea for you, but keep in mind that some yorkies are climbers. Lexi learned to climb out of her 3 feet tall gated play pen at only 6 months old and she was only about 3 lbs. I still use it but i had to hot glue 2 feet worth of foam board on the top of each gate. It looks ridiculous, but it keeps her from escaping. If you live in an apartment you also have to think about barking. Some yorkies get separation anxiety and will bark a lot when you leave. So you want to get her used to you leaving early on. |

I never thought about the climbing issue....lol....(Prison Break). I'll have to run out to go to the gym or run errands or even work a part-time summer job, so the puppy will get used to me not being home ALL day. But I will place an old t-shirt with my scent in the playpen, so they won't be too sad when I'm gone. Great advice though, thank you. |
Abby chewed her way out of a mesh pen on her first day with us- I quickly ordered an Iris 36" tall 8- panel expen from Amazon. It was suggested on this site to always use the door and Never lift over the top, so Abby wouldn't know that was a way out. She has never attempted to climb it. One of the best investments I made, we still use it 3 years later! |

This is the same one I have... love it, but unfortunately Lexi figured out how to climb out after only a few days of having it. |

I just ordered the mesh play pen from amazon for my little guy he's 4 pounds and about 4 months old, he's never really climbed anything, but I'm hoping he doesn't chew through the mesh, any ideas how to stop this, if he tries? |

I've never personally used it, but I know pet stores sell a spray that you can use that has a bitter taste to discourage biting on stuff. |
