toy / treat aggression I just rescued a half Yorkie and half not sure. The rescue only had her a few days before I got her. She has been spayed and is a super sweet girl until she gets on the bed I bought her. The foster mom said she has toy aggression with other dogs but not people but when I approached her if she is on the doggie bed and she has a toy or treat she growls and has snapped at me. I have claimed all the toys and only give them to her now if she sits or works for them but still have the issue. She is not otherwise food aggressive. Anyone have any advice? |
I like to use the 'trade game' for resource guarding. Important things to keep in mind 1) Make sure that the item you are offering, treat or toy, is of higher value than what she is guarding. You can set this up by giving her a lower value toy. 2) Never approach her too quickly or from the front, face-to-face, this can be taken as being confrontational, you want her to the side of you. 3) Do not stand or lean over her (again...threatening and confrontational) Stand straight. Show her the offering and ask,"Do you want to trade?" If your dog is interested she will drop her toy and come over in which time you will toss the treat a few inches off to the side. As she eats her treat you will simultaneously praise her and calmly pick up the toy...again no fast movement... as this can cause her to change her mind thinking no, my toy is more valuable. 4) Never not give or withhold offering in a trade. Keep practicing. How do you know if it's working? She may bring her toy over to you asking for a trade. |
