Our dogs have to stay in the crate while we are at work, even at 2.5 years old. I have tried on and off throughout this time to leave them gated in the kitchen, and it has never worked out. They've repeatedly pooped the floor, ate the walls, gnawed on wallpaper. I've blocked off damaged wall #1 and then 6months later, tried again, and they chose a new wall to "remodel." We litter trained our Yorkie and absolutely love it! No stinky pee pee pads or messes to worry about. He can be home alone. He just runs to his litter box to eliminate. He is a Year and a half now, but when he was a puppy, we put him in a good size pen in the kitchen with a litter box, with paper on the floor in case of an accident. Every half hour or so, we put him in the litter box and said, "go Potty". If he did we would praise him and give him a tiny treat. He got the hang of it very soon. After we were confident that he got the idea, we gated off the kitchen and put his litter box in plain view. Very seldom did he make a mistake. If he did, we would say No and put him in the litter box and say, Go Potty. The litter box is now in the laundry room. We get a No Dust, clumping litter at Wal-Mart. It Never never has an odor. When we see a clump, we just take it out and put it in a small plastic bag and toss it. When he poops, we just pick it up with toilet tissue and flush it. Great for travel, as we take it with us. No rainy, or night time walks! |
Caan you combine potty pads and taking you dog outside? I will be a new mom to a yorkie in about 4 weeks when he is ready to leave the breeder! I am so excited and nervous! I have a flexible schedule but some days I will be gone at least eight hours. I am debating if I want to crate train or just put my yorkie in my kitchen with baby gates and potty pads. But I am wondering if any of you out there have trained your yorkies to use potty pads and go outside? I am trying to figure out if it is best to pick one method over the other or if both ways of training could work? I appreciate any guidance on this one, Newmama13 :eek: |

My Moses is also dual trained. On the days he doesn't go to doggie daycare, I gate him in a small tiled hallway off the family room. He has his bed, his favorite chew bone and his monkey for company, along with his water and a potty pad. If one of the kids come home during the day, they put him out to potty and then back in the gated area when they leave again. I was just putting the pads down with newspaper, and he would move the pad around and miss it when he pottied. I recently bought a potty pad holder, which fixed THAT problem! But when we are home, he barks to tell us potty. He is 7 months old. |
I need help with potty training with my Yorkie. She is sweet but whe we leave she uses the puppy pad and they tears it all up on my tile floor which creates a mess. What's going on with her. |
Hi i'm getting my Yorkiepoo around begining to middle March, i'm thinking Crate & indoor Playpen type fencing around the Dining room as its open plan to Lounge. Put Puppy pee pads just outside of Crate & another further on. Her Cosy Bed & little Blanket &Cuddly Toy & a Chewy can be in Crate, Water & Food just outside Door of Crate. That way i think She will be easier to train & like the Crate Door Always open prob. Hope it works! 😃 |
