taking food away from bowl and eating Hello everyone. We have the sweetest yorkie in the world (at least we think so :) ). He is almost perfect obedience wise but there is one small thing that gets on our nerves. He will almost never eat at his bowl. He will take a mouth full of food and carry to around where we are and eat it. It might not be at our feet but he is close. I don't know if this helps but we also have a full size lab. The lab will eat at his bowl. There really isn't any competition for the food. To be honest our little yorkie is the boss :). Our lab is very mild manured. Right now this behavior hasn't been a huge problem since we have darker carpets but unfortunately the house where we will be moving into has ALL white carpets. Uggghhh. Can anyone suggest a good way to try to curb this behavior? thanks |
He sounds like a social eater. He wants to eat with you. Has he always been this way? Maybe he feels safer around you? I think some of the Yorkies behavior is misleading, they bark up a storm and act like the boss, but I think it means they feel threatened. You could try putting him in a gated room without the other dog and see if he eats better there. Or closing off the kitchen until he finishes all his food. Some people feed their dogs in the kennel and that might make him feel safer. Do you free feed or feed several times a day? My two eat so fast, I can't get out of the kitchen before they are finished eating. |
One of our Yorkies does this also. She takes kibble away from her dish to eat it. We have off-white carpet, and the kibble has never left a residue on it. |
My little female has started having strong eating preferences. She's more comfortable with some distance between herself and her brothers. We've tried various placements and one that none of them objects to is eating in his/her kennel, as Nancy1999 suggested. Sort of like having their own rooms, they seem relaxed when--even with the door open--they're in a familiar and comfy space. It may help, too, that their kennels are near where we are so they can feel we're "on the lookout" while they're focused on eating. |
Lucy does this too. She'll grab a few kibbles, run away from the bowl, toss the kibbles, then chase after them and eat them. I think she just like to play and since she's my only child, there's no competition so she can dawdle all she likes. I think it's adorable :) |
My first yorkie I had did that with his food his whole life. I am more curious however, why you would keep a Lab and Yorkie and white carpets? My home is changed to be suitable to pet ownership rather than expecting my pets to deal with white carpet. Actually I would not fair well with white carpet, I am always spilling something, hate not wearing shoes in my house, drives me nuts when I visit somewhere and have to leave shoes at the door. Years ago I had an enquiry from someone looking for a puppy that just finished renovating and put in all white carpet. Forget getting a dog especially a puppy. |
My 8 year old has always done the same thing, his kibble is always everywhere, he has stashes of kibble hidden and he has fun while eating. My puppy is the same way. I leave kibble in places for him to hunt, it really doesn't bother me as long as they eat. |
Chibi does this too. He likes to come crunch it loudly in front of me. I always thought it was cute. |
Blazer does this and so does his mother. I'm ok with it as long as Blazer eats everything that he carries around. Such a goofball? |
Oh dear, kind of an unproblem. Yorkies do this and it's kind of funny. Sometimes I have to throw a few pieces around just to get Ali interested. If you want pup to stand in one place and eat a full meal, feed canned food. If he carries that around, then you have a problem. |
Several of my dogs did this. One would bring three pieces at a time to eat on my beb. She was the only dog. Think its just a dog thing. Breaking it guess you have to keep him/ her in the room with the food till done. Unless they get stubborn and wont eat. Trying to wrte with a yorky licking my face. Lol hard to do |
The good news is that most dog foods don't use food coloring anymore, that can cause some stains on any color carpet. |
As for your carpet "issue," there HAS to be a room in the house where there is no carpet. Mudroom? Laundry room? Dining room? Or put a great big doggie rug under her food dish and try to get her to only eat on the rug. |
After puzzling over this with a visiting Yorkie-we wre surprised to see our new guy do the same- the problem? He was afraid of his reflection in the bowl- To his very small eyes, it looked like another dog coming for the food- Solution-we got a matte rectangle feeding bowl- actually a cat bowl- that doesn't glint or reflect- problem solved- though he does still take kibble into his bed to snack on- |
