Potty Training Problem Im sure this has been answered 1000 times and everyone I talk to has the answer but I would sure like to get an answer from a Yorkie owner. My new Yorkie puppy is 17 weeks old Ive had her for 8 days. Shes extremely smart it seems and learned potty training in just a few days. I take her from her cage in the morning and we walk in the backyard and I tell her "Potty" she runs to her spot and pee pees. After I feed her we do the same exact thing and she poo poos. I leave the back door open a little and several times have seen her wander out to the back yard and potty all on her own. For the last several days about 10-15 minutes after I have taken her outside and she pee pees I will see her run to the open back door stop before going outside squat and pee on the carpet. I of course run and pick her up and put her down outside to finish while telling her NO in a stern voice. I don't want to spank her. I clean the carpet with a carpet cleaner, use a pet specific odor remover to be sure no smell remains. Still she does this at least once every day for the passed 3 days. Any suggestions what I should be doing that I am not or things I am doing that I shouldnt be. Are my expectations too high? My wife has 2 shelties and we have been married for 3 years she had the dogs before me. They have NEVER gone in the house. Shes a spanker and yeller which I dont think I want to do to my little Yorkie. |
I'm no expert but if you've only had for 8 days i would make sure to be consistent with the praising as soon she goes in the spot you want her to. Letting her go outside at will (leaving the door open) and assuming you don't follow her out to praise her isn't reinforcing her good behaviour. You need to be there every time she does her business where you want her to and jump for joy, praise and treat her at least for a few weeks until it becomes a habit for her. |
Also from my experience, whenever i left a mat in front of the door it would get peed on, no matter how much i sprayed with the order remover stuff. Make sure there are enzymes in it like Nature's Miracle or something and if possible remove the rug? obviously you can't do that if it's not just a mat but those are my 2 cents and i'm sure many will be here shortly to offer you more advice :) |
Thank you for the advice. Im being more consistant and really praising her when she goes in the right spot. Think I was just too anxious for her to be housebroken. We have a schedule and routine and shes doing awesome. |
