Pad training help needed for Rescue I adopted a little guy who about 10 and he is NOT housebroken. He doesn't even have the concept. His companion from the same family will use a pad every time. I don't know if its because she's a girl, or just got some training he didn't. Anyway, I'm starting out at a disadvantage because he came in so scared and so afraid of being picked up that I couldn't and still can't just move him onto a pad. He likes no known treat and making a fuss over him if he's a good boy just scares him. We work so he's going to get left alone for a few to 8 hours and being in a crate scares him. (I'm hoping he will get over that, it might be from being in the shelter.) I have no idea how to give him the idea that the pad is where to go. My Yorkie/tzu learned because I could put her on it and reward her, but I can't do that with Toto. I'm wondering about confining him to the kitchen where the pads are scattered around (the more targets the better) and trying a belly band on him. But then how do I get him on the pads? I wonder if a small puppy pen with pads would work since he couldn't help but pee on the pads if he's in it. Any suggestions are welcome including where I can fine such a tiny belly band or how to make one. :animal-pa |
A small puppy pen might work with pads. Try boiled chicken for a treat, I can not imagine any dog turning their nose up at that. As for praise, whisper. A kind, loving, quiet praise can work well. I have one that isn't a rescue, but she responds to gentle and quiet very well. The loud ,high pitched sound makes her look at me like I am yelling at her and she will hide. Patience, buckets and buckets of patience. He has been afraid for a long time and now he has to learn to feel safe and loved. |
