Need suggestions My Jazzi is 7 mo. old. Got her right before Christmas. When I'm home I take her outside to do her business. She still has accidents. My problem is when were gone all day to work 6:30 to 5:30. I tried her in a large wired pen and sectioned off her bed and puppy pad. She still messed everywhere. Now, I have her gated in the kitchen, which is small area, but room to play in. I put puppy pads down, but she always messes in front of the gate then walks in it all day. I had pads in front of gate then moved them back to see if she would use them. she still messes in front of gate. What is the best solution. Have to wash her feet everyday. It doesn't seem to bother her to walk in her messes. Will she catch on someday. She sleeps all night with us and doesn't mess. Help!! |
Thats the nice thing about crate training. It worked well for me. They say that a dog won't mess where he sleeps. If you buy a crate big enough just for him to sleep and turn around in comfortable thats all they need. I've had two yorkies and crate training has worked well for me with both of them. |
I'm not sure what the solution is, but I can tell you why she has this problem. It's because she spends all of her time in front of that gate waiting for you to come home. She's there waiting when she needs to poop and she's still waiting there for you after she poops. Doesn't help with the problem, but maybe helps to understand it and to lower your frustration level a bit. She does it because she misses you! Many people swear by crate-training. The hours you describe are awfully long for a dog to spend in a crate, though. If you do decide on crate-training, try to make it as enjoyable for her as possible. Here is a good article about doing that: http://www.clickersolutions.com/articles/2001/crate.htm Hopefully, others will have better suggestions than I! |
I agree it seems to me that she is just waiting by the gate for you to get home!! With our girls we always tried to put pee pads down when they choose, if they kept having accidents in one part of the room we would put a pee pad down and that solved it, over time they learned to just go to that area and so now we only have two pee pads down!! I am not sure I would crate train her with it being almost 12 hours, but maybe you could find someone to come and walk her once or twice a day to give her a break and some attention!! |
I can never get mad at her for messing on the floor. I know she misses me a lot when I'm gone. I may try a smaller crate and see how she does. I live out in the country and don't have anyone to come let her out. Wish I did. Still open to any suggestions. Love this forum. |
