Attacking DAD - 5 Week Old Puppies - HELP! Hi All - I REALLY, REALLY need some help. We had two puppies five weeks ago. They're doing great, growing and cute as ever! Over the past few days my husband has wanted to take them out of the pen to play with them on the living room floor. Last night, one of the puppies innocently ran toward the dad to play and he attacked him. The dad's body language seems to imply that he doesn't know what they are -- he's really afraid of the puppies. Any advice on how to properly introduce dad to his two puppies. We're planning to keep both pups so it's imperative that we solve this so no one gets hurt. I'm keeping the puppies separated from him and in their pen until this problem is solved --- would just be heartbroken if anything bad happened. As always, your guidance and advice would be GREATLY Appreciated - Moma d |
I have never allowed my mommas with their babies, interacting with other females , and especially the breeding males, ie the father of the puppies. Other females and other males can easily kill the babies....when the babies are 14 weeks old, they are allowed to begin to socialize with other dogs, one at a time and always carefully supervised. There are breeders that have no issue putting all the babies together and mixing them up with other females and males.....I choose not to take that risk. I have kept several puppies, and allowing them to "socialize" with the other dogs after age 14 weeks, has not caused any issues for the puppies, the other females/males, or the momma of the puppies. Your babies will do just fine integrating with the group, if you keep them separated until they are weaned and not under mommas very strict, protective guidance. |
Yorkie Mom -- Thank you kindly for the advice!! I really like your approach! They puppies are in their own room separated from the other dogs in the household. We do own Mom & Dad -- I won't let anyone around them until after they're 14 weeks old and ready to be socialized with other dogs. It's critical to me that everyone remain safe, healthy and well adjusted!! Warm Regards! |
Most of my mommas do not want any other dogs, including daddy, around the litter....she plays with her babies in their playpen in my bedroom....then after they have 2 vaccinations in them (11 weeks old) , I will bring the playpen into the sunroom and allow another dog to interact with momma and babies through the playpen...if this upsets momma too much, I stop and wait until she is ready to allow interaction with the other dogs, one at a time.....too many dogs clustering around the playpen, coming from all angles and sides, is too overwhelming for momma. By age 14 weeks, momma will watch them interact thru the playpen with other dogs, and she is usually very tolerant at that stage. I let my mommas dictate to me how and when they the raise their litter.....all my females are very good mommas and only as they begin to get some age on them, do they start indicating to me they are not into fooling with these puppies so intently anymore....so that female will be retired. I feel that when the ladies are loosing interest in what used to be a loving joy for them, it is time to stop breeding them! |
