HELP!!! - maniac running through the house I am in desperate need of help. When ever I need to pick up Maddie to go somewhere or do something (even to get a leash on) she runns through the house like a maniac. I know she thinks this is a fun game - but it gets so frustrating when I need to leave for work and I have to get her to take to daycare. I have been trying to ignore her when she does this - but she is one smart little puppy. I want to teach her to come, not trick her into anything. Now she'll run and hide under the dining room table. Help please!!! |
Try shaking the treat jar :-) |
Rocky does the same thing. I leave his leash on him after his morning outing, because I do not have time to play the "catch me if you can" game. My dog trainer advised me to this, so that I can correct him when he does and to teach him how to come when I call him. |
Sailor was the same way for the longest time, we were so fustrated with her. It would take us like 10 minutes just to try and get her to come and stay so we can pick her up!! We talked to a trainer and they told us to work with her at different times during the stay, but not right before leaving. We would sit down with some treats and ask her to come and then slow get her to stay there longer and longer until she would stay long enough to be picked up. This really seemed to work with her, after a couple of weeks she learned what stay was and now will stay about 85% of the time when asked to. We are still working with her as she backslides at times. |
Cali will usually come when I ask if she wants a treat unless she has something better! Alo we ring the doorbell! Works every time! Still works with my 9 yearold pom too. |
No chasing. Try sitting down low on the floor and if the little one looks your way toss a treat. If he steps closer to you toss a treat. And so on till he is next to you clip one the leash and bonus treat him. Now when you go to pick him. Never lean over him, never face him, Side view of you to him and get low at his side. Leaning over and full frontal view is rude to a dog. Plus if you approach try doing a curve move so start in front of the dog and move up and around in a half circle to the side. If you watch dogs come together that is the way they do it. Joy |
HUm... Maybe if you starved her a little. Then if you offer just her food she will come. |

I hope your kidding? She just needs to learn coming to you is the best thing in the world. You obtain that result thru love, praise and tons of treats. If she doesn't do it immediately just be consistant and stick with it. You should be sitting down on the floor with her when you have a spare chance and work on name recognition, sit, down, come and other basic commands. As frustrating as it is she wants to please you but it's up to you to teach her how. Once she catches on that something pleases you and is equally rewarding for her you will see steady results. |
You've been given several good suggestions. You've got to teach her that coming when called is the best thing in the world. Here is a good article on teaching her to "come" (also known as a recall): http://www.clickersolutions.com/arti...002/recall.htm If you have been using "come" as your command (which she largely ignores), I would use a different word when you start this method. Maybe here, get me, let's go - whatever you choose. In the meantime, it may help to put a leash on her before she's cued in to the fact that you're about to leave, etc. Maybe put it on as soon as you get up. Give her a treat for getting the leash on: it's a behavior you want to encourage, so reward it. I'm quite confident that with patience and training, this can be fixed. Good luck! Oh! One more thing. You may need to increase the value of your treats. If she doesn't always want to come for a dog treat, try tiny cubes of cheese or meat. |
