Dominating Puppy We had our first baby Acorn, female, for about a year and a half before we adopted her biological sister, an 8 week old puppy we named Coconut, in December. They get along great it seems, although they are completely opposite! Acorn is very timid, small, and shy, while Coconut is a bit chubby ball of energy! Acorn just turned two, and Coconut is 10 months. Last night I caught Coconut trying to hump Acorn! It alarmed me so I looked to the internet for reasons why her little sister would be trying to mount. I thought I saw her trying to do it once before, a few weeks ago, but my husband told me they were probably just playing. I found that this could be Coconut trying to establish her dominance over Acorn. This just concerns me because Acorn is so shy and small, I'm afraid she will feel that way in her own home! I don't want her to feel unsafe. Is this (establishing dominance) a problem? How can I help correct it? |
It does sound like she is trying to establish dominance. Buster has a friend who tries to do this so I generally try to separate them when doing this and say no Lola as I don't want Buster to feel his is being dominated in his own house. Maybe others who have multiple dog households will add their advice. |
