HELP....he wont stop biting at my hands hi everyone, its been a while since i been on the forum but want to see what are your thoughts to my issue. my 3in a half month old Yorkie Buddy constantly bites at my hands. i try not to make sudden movements with them but he still goes for them. if we are playing with a toy and i go down to grab it, all his focus shifts towards biting my hand. any advice to remedy the issue would be great. thanks |
Young dogs love to play and show their passionate feelings biting hands - and sometimes they bite too hard. Either just grab him and hold onto his little muzzle longer than he would like(you'll have to grab him up first usually as they are too fast to just reach out and grab hold of a puppy muzzle) or immediately stand up and walk away - end of all fun play the moment the hard biting starts. Once the dog learns - and this takes a while when they are just puppies - that they get grabbed up and their muzzle held or all the fun play stops once the hard biting happens - then they learn that hard-biting is not good and begin to try to remember to soften their bites or avoid play-biting altogether. But being young dogs, they do forget many times over and bite hard and it's up to the owner/guardian to always apply the same gentle, consistent teaching discipline each time he bites hard in order to get across the message that hard biting is not tolerated. |
Try rubbing a little solid deodorant on your hands during play time and each time he goes for your hand in stead of the toy come back with etetet and no bite. He's still a baby and learning what is correct behavior and not correct. Just like some human babies, they go through a biting stage till they learn it is not acceptable behavior. Good luck. |
thanks for the info... i have started to grab his mouth when he goes to bite and also i just compltly turn way or stand up and walk away. ill keep up these methods and see if he gets better with time. thanks again |
Hi! With my two pups, the way that I trained them was every time that they bit my hand I would yell "ouch" as if it hurt and pull my hand back. They learned very quickly using this method and both of them never bite. I wouldn't use any methods that incorporate deodorant because it can be toxic to dogs. Good luck! |

I just let my 14 week old bite my ponytail instead |
I tried the "ouch" approach and it didn't work for me. My boy just wants to play harder and think it's fun. My vet told me to try the spray bottle. Just spray some water on his face with a bottle of water gun when he start biting and say no. |
Does that count as an ALS #icebucketchallenge? LOL! |
Haha :P Yorkie style! |
