Help! My mom wants me to give him away unless...
 

Hi All.

I am in desperate need of some advice. My mom is insisting we give away our 7-month old Max unless he starts behaving. We got him only about 6 weeks ago, payed a pretty hefty penny but she doesn't care because she is out of patience. A few of the things he does...

(a) the chewing. he goes after everything, especially paper. he takes any slippers or shoes and runs away with them to lick and bite at them. if he somehow gets his paws on a napkin, it will be in a million pieces all over the floor. he has already destroyed a cable wire and we had to call the cable company to come and replace it.

(b) his seemingly inability to be trained when it comes to the bathroom. it seems no matter what we try, he just does his business (both) in the house, wherever he pleases, whenever he pleases. even if he goes out, he stills does it in the house.

(c) cannot be left alone in a room or tied up if we are not in sight. the barking/yelping/screeching/crying will not stop until he is either let free or sees one of us.

I really don't want to give him away because I fell in love but this is her house and I am trying my best. Any advice would be appreciated.

I'm sorry you are having difficulties.
Here are a few ideas. If Max has a shoe or any object you don't want him to have, say no no, take it away and him him a kong, or dog toy to chew on. Crate training is good for potty training, also consistency and praise. Kind of like potty training a toddler.
Have you tried a dog trainer? I know a good trainer who goes to your home in SI and Brooklyn . I see you are in NY too. If you are interested, pm me and I can give you her info.

Welcome to YT, you selected the right place to come to for advise. For starters, you have to keep him confined to one area. He cannot have the run of the house until he is trained. Many members confine their youngsters to ex-pens.... Potty training, are you using pee pads or training for outside only?..... Do you live in an apartment or a house?..... Is he on scheduled feeding?..... Does he have teething toys? We need to know more about lil Max living conditions in order to give suggestion or advise. Most of us use our experience, but what works for one pup may not work for yours. More members will be along shortly to offer suggestions. It's been years since I raised a wee lil pup and there is so much more out there to make house training and behavior training easier then when I was raising my puppies. But, I will say this, years back when I was raising puppies, I worked, but they were confined to a small area, when I came home I would let them have the entire apartment, I had lamp wires chewed, one of my pups chewed up 8 pairs of slippers, she learned how to open my sliding door closest, and went for the slippers, every other week I was out buying another pair of slippers. Whose decision was it to get lil Max,yours or your moms?

Is my little man lacking something in his diet?

1. We are trying to train for outside only. We tried the pads but he takes them and chews them up and pieces go all over the house.
2. We live in an apartment.
3. He isn't on scheduled feeding. At all.
4. It was my decision. We lost our Jack Terrier Sammy about a year ago (he was with us for a decade) and we finally decided to get a new pet. We do love Max or at the very least, I am totally in love but I understand my mom's lack of patience.

Since this was YOUR decision this will all fall mostly on you, because you have to keep mom happy in order to keep this lil baby..Lets start with out side potty training. He MUST be on a scheduled feeding time. I don't know if you work or go to school. When I worked and had puppies I wouldpaper train first, (there was no such thing as wee wee pads) when they were 100% paper trained I would then start to house break them, by 7 months old they were 100 % house broken, but since Max likes to shred his pee pee pads you'll have to train outside potty. Most members use ex-pens which is very good to train potty on pads, since Max is 7 months and has not (I assume) been crated i don't think he will take being confined in one at this age. Remember they were first trained to peepee & poop on the paper, Paper was always left down until they were 100% house broken, this is what I did... I would feed them at 7AM, at 7:30AM I would walk them even if they had already made on the paper I would still take them out for walk at7:30 as we walked I would tell them to make pee pee & poo poo. I would walk 4 blocks down and 4 blocks back to house. When I first started this training most of the time they would have already made on the paper, but they have to know at a certain time they are going to eat and shortly after they will go out for a walk. You have to be consistent with feeding and walking time. I would have them confined to a small area where their food, water, paper & bed was. I left for work at 8AM. I came home at 4:30,even if they peed and pooped on their paper I walked them as soon as I came home, I would feed them again at 5PM and another walk at 5:30PM. At 10PM I would just take them down to the curb for their last pee pee of the night, bed time was 11PM for me. I don't know if your mom is home all day, if she is would she walk him? If she works that would be better, he has to be confined to a small area, one where he cannot chew up things. If your mom is home durning the day, it makes it hard to confine him, if he sees her up and about he's gonna want to be out also. If she is home can she walk him at a certain time every day at the same time? Consistency is the key word. They have to know every day at a certain time they will be fed or walked. Dogs are creatures of habit. It will be up to YOU to determine what time to feed Max and 30 minutes later YOU have to walk him, the same later in the day....Chewing slippers, shoes, socks, you and mom have to train yourselves to put these in a room that he cannot get to. Keep temptation out of reach. You have to watch him like a hawk, know where he is at all times, if you don't see him he is getting into trouble. Puppies are just like 2 y/o, you cannot take your eyes off them, If he does get a shoe, slipper or sock, anything he is not supposed to have, get one of his toys, go to him, if he has it in his mouth, tell him to “drop it” and remove it from his mouth and give him his toy and praise him, tell him “good boy”, if what ever he has is on the floor, pick it up, tell him “no no” and give him his toy and praise him, again “good boy”. Always use the same command words…. As for shredding paper, lol, this seems to be a yorkie thing. We have to train ourselves, just as if we had a 2 y/o in the house, you have to keep the baby safe, same with a puppy. Where ever he is getting paper from you have to make sure he can’t reach it. Keep the bathroom door closed so he can’t get toilet tissue, keep a lid on kitchen trash can so he can’t get into that. Having a puppy is a lot of work, and we have to make some changes to keep them from getting into trouble. Yorkies are very mischievous little imps, very playful. You also wrote he carries on if he is tied up, yikes!!!! Never tie him while in the house, he carries on because he wants to be with his family, you. Members advise getting a good starter book called, (I think) yorkies for dummies. Simple steps on training and obedience. You MUST have a lot of patience with terriers, they take longer to train. Maybe taking him to obedience school would be good, you yourself has to be trained before you can train your puppy, so the schooling is for both the owner and the dog. Potty training seems to be the bigger and most important issue, me not knowing if you are home, in school, if your mom is working or home all day makes it difficult to advise correctly. Getting a puppy is a big responsibility and a lot of work,which is going to fall on you since mom is so fed up. You have to do as much as possible, try to keep mom out of it as much as possible. If shredding the pee pads is a problem, you can use washable ones. When you are home, I would have him tethered to you, so you can watch him. If not, an x-pen would probably work.
