puppy partially house traines Hi everyone I really need some advice I have a 19 week old yorkie that I have been working my behind off to house train.She goes on command when I take her out but I have 2 strange problems she always always always poops in her crate no matter how late I take her out and even if she pooped at 3 am her crate is very tiny and I made it even smaller still the same thing no matter what and I have tried everything she poops in the crate but the other thing I have noticed the past few days is , I have a glass sunroom and I started just leaving the door open while we are out there and yep she goes right out on her own and does her business but inside she will just do her business on the floor so I am wondering how I would teach her to let me know when she needs out because I can't just stay out on the sun room please advise I really need some advice Thanks so much |
Hi and welcome to YT. Do you wash the bedding with an enzyme spray? I have learned they will go in places that have the scent. Hopefully others will add their advice. |
19 weeks is still very young. Kenzie is a bit larger than the other girls so she potty trained pretty easially. I took her out every hour for quite a while and now that she is a year , I have learned her que that she wants out. All dogs go outside here approx. every 1 1/2 to 2 hrs anyway. Tilly is pretty tiny at 4lbs and has a bladder the size of a green pea. She doesn't stay in her crate unless we leave the house. There is always a potty pad in there and if she pees or poos there I am thrilled and do a happy dance,better there than my floor. She is now 7mos and as she has gotten older she has gotten to where she will ring the bell or walk circles in her crate if she wants outside,I can hear the crate rattle. She is actually using the potty pad less and less as her own choise. Mina is 3yrs old. When I brought her home at 13 weeks I thought that she would use potty pads because she was trained to them by the breeder. UM no,she saw the other,older dogs go outside and that is the way it has been. She pottied in my house maybe 3 times and it was always because I was late letting the dogs out. The other dogs are older and will wait. Good luck. |
Take the bedding out and leave it out, clean the kennel with natures miracle or something like that. If you pup keeps going in her kennel there might be a medical issue. Dogs don't like to potty where they sleep. |
Ginger is 22 weeks, we crate here at night as we don't plan on getting up at night. She is Piddle Pad trained 100% and her crate, 3 x2 is half towel and back half pee pad. She uses the Piddle Pad all day and usually before going to bed in crate. When she was younger she peed and pooped on pad in crate, now she seldom does and goes as soon as we let her out in the morn. I was scolded by breeder for having pad in crate, because "it hindered house training", well ginger only had one accident and that was my fault, since we got her at 8 weeks. I wouldn't expect a puppy to hold for 8 hours now, but know she will as she gets older. She even tells me when she poops on the Piddle Pad if I'm not in the room so I can take it out. She will find me and do the after poop scratch no matter where I am so I know to get rid of the stinky stuff. |
OK is it just me or is letting your pup poop and pee in there crate on a pad a BAD idea? If your pup is pooping and peeing then your crate is to big, it should be big enough for them to turn around but not stand up completely. Or move far enough to one end and relieve him self and able to get far enough away. A crate is there den "safe place" and should be taught that. I would set a timer to go off every hour and take the pup out, even at night. I did that for one pup and had him house broken over a weekend. |

Ginger is pad trained from breeder at 8 weeks and never been a problem. As I said she has the pad in the 3 x 2 crate and now seldom uses it without the hassles of getting up at all hours or expecting a puppy to hold it. Breeder said it was bad too, but it works for me and we get a full nights sleep plus a house broken pup. |

Put her on a feeding schedule and potty schedule. Mine eats at five am and two pm. They go out after they eat to pee and poop on command. It's all business not play time, that's done at a another time. Before I leave to go out I take them for a walk to empty, and leave a pad in case I am fine longer than one hour. In between eating pick a time that is convenient for you to take them out. I usually do it about four hour intervals. Eat 5 out, out 930, eat 2 out, 5 out, last time out 10 pm. |
Jess sleeps in a medium sized crate with a bed in the front and pad in the back. She goes to bed between 9-10 and gets up around 630-7 but usually pees or has a poop on the pad during the night. No one wants to get up with her so it works for us. During the day she pee/poops on a pad downstairs. She has occasional mistakes but its less and less. she does not like to go out side..go figure.. |

Our house is very open and when she is given the run of the house I guess it is just so much space for her age/development that she cannot perceive of all that space being her "den". Therefore she does eliminate. I have total faith that we will get this under control. Not worried. Just takes alot of time and patience. They so want to please. I don't think it is on purpose.. they just have to be "ready". |

It's great because I can be anywhere in the house and here her ring the bell. She has only had 2 accidents since she was 4 months old and one was because I forgot to put the bell on the doorknob and one because I was taking a shower and forgot to put her in her crate. |
