My Yorkie's embarrassing habit Hi everyone. I have just registered on the site and am really excited about being part of this wonderful Yorkie loving family!:) My first question is actually a bit embarrassing. My beautiful girl, Angel :aimeeyork eats her 'business'. She has been doing it since we adopted her (at 10 weeks and she is now 7 months). She is a very happy pup and has a huge zest for life so it's not because she is depressed. We live in an apartment and she uses a puppy pad and is very good about it. We feed her a super nutritious diet of chicken, pulses and fresh herbs and the vet says she is perfectly healthy. Apparently this is a Yorkie 'thing'. Has anyone else had the same problem? :blush::blush::blush: |
Hi and Welcome to YT! Sadly this can be a problem... sometimes they learn it from their birth moms and it carries over. Feeding pineapple changes the flavor and makes it taste less appealing... or be very quick and get it picked up right away. Sometimes they see us pick it up and think they need to follow suit or want to help, lol. |

Try the pineapple thing it is very effective. If that doesn't work you can purchase products from a pet store or on line that helps to stop feces-eating. |
My Pheebee did this when I first got her....I changed her food and use a digestive enzyme/probiotic powder in her food and she has stopped. |
Yup, we had that issue, I was horrified until I read they learned it from their good mommies that kept their pen clean. ick. I just made a negative but calm sound every time I caught her and I immediately cleaned it up. It's kind of easy if you know their "business" schedule ;) |
Hi Im new here too. Roxy is 4 months. My Roxy did that last night actually. I took her out quickly at 11 pm last night because she was gonna poop in the house. It was dark outside and i couldn't see where her business was but i found a light and sure enough she was eating it . GAG!! |
Pineapple didn't work for my guy and the powder the vet gave me didn't really work either. I know it might sound mean (my mother thinks I am heartless for doing this) but try putting tabasco sauce all over the poops after she's done and when she goes for it, she will likely not like the spicy flavour. Be sure to not give her water for at least 10 mins so shelearns and not just wash out the taste. I seems to have worked for me. My guy doesn't seem to fight me for it or run to eat it anymore. It also helps if you know your dog's poopie schedule. |
One of my Rainbow Bridge babies did that. It took me a while to break the habit. I wish I knew about the pineapple. Gracie was given to me by her breeder when she was 6.5 months old when she remained too tiny to breed. We had two other puppies from the same breeder, and they all had the same sire. Our oldest was 1.5 years old, and we didn't have problems with either Ashley or Kiwi. One day my husband saw her go to eat the poop and he said, "Gracie no!" He was not angry at all, but his voice was emotional and louder than usual. He said she looked so scared, and it haunts him even today, and it was almost twenty years ago. He said he will never ever raise his voice again, unless it's to show pleasure He still talks about that experience today with such regret. Gracie was a happy and confident little girl, but if know the experience affected her. We both loved our little girl more than I could ever express. It's difficult to hide our displeasure about poop eating, but it may make it worse for our pups. |
