Should I retire the bell I got Lexi in the beginning of April at 13 weeks old. I started potty training her to go outside. It surprisingly only took a week and a couple days after that I got her to start ringing a bell hanging from the door. It was wonderful and she would go to the bell every time. Now that it is finally warming up here in Wisconsin she wants to be outside ALL the time and will ring the bell ALL the time just to go outside. I can never tell if she really needs to go or not. I took the bell off a couple times and she would of course go to the door still and sometimes I would just ignore her if I didn't think she really needed to go. I'm just worried that ignoring her at the door, she will stop going to the door when she needs to go. I know she can hold it for a longer time now that she is 5 months old and I was thinking on taking her on my schedule and teaching her that she goes when I take her out instead. Just wondering if anyone else does this or if it's a bad idea? |
I would keep the bell and work on the false alarms, watch her for signs, teach her the bell is for potty only. Do you have a "potty" command word, control her on "Bell Trips" so its not a snoop around, but pure business. Now having her on a schedule is fine too, the bell should be for emergencies then, you know yourself sometimes you just have to go sometimes. I plan on bell training soon as she gets past her puppy shots/immunity time and can go outside. Your still in the early training so it should be cake to clarify the bell is for potty. Puppies are smarter then their owners most times and can do more then the owners think the are capable of, so the limiting factor most times is the owner. |

Thanks for the advise. I will have to work on making it "pure business." I make sure the backyard if for play and front yard is for potty, but I will have to make sure she knows that too! |
Sig our Heeler was door trained, she would just go sit by the door and wait, but Ginger being a Yorkie, I think we will need a bell because we might not see her sitting by the door, lol. By the way, the "Potty" command will be powerful once ingrained, Sig would go Potty even if she didn't need to, or at least try like heck. Its convenient to clear her out before going back in the house or getting ready to go on a road trip, plus at night it quickens the nature calls. |
Blazer went through the phase of ringing the bell just to go out and play. I made sure that every time it rang I'd ask if he has to go potty, then outside I'd tell him go potty until he went (or at least tried) then praise him like crazy. He figured out very quickly that the bell is for potty time only. |
