Has anyone ever tried a product similar to these for training purposes. I was thinking about getting one to teach Lexi not to run out the door when it is opened or to not leave the yard. I don't plan on letting her run around the yard off leash, but I have a huge fear of her accidentally getting out of the house. She can be sleeping peacefully on the couch and the moment she hears the front door open she is up and at the door in seconds. We also live close to a semi busy street. If she was to get out, I want her to know not to leave the yard, and thought one of these collars might be a good training tool.

I would never use an e-collar or shock collar on a small dog. No need.

Jackson has been trained to not leave out of an open door without the use of a shock collar perfectly fine. We use clicker training/positive reinforcement/relationship-based training.

As far as offleash training, start with a thin long lead and practice recall over and over again.

I wouldn't use a shock collar just one with vibration or sound. I would also use positive reinforcement. Just thought this would help some. Thanks for the suggestions.

When I was working at a kennel in Huachuca City many years ago and shock collars were just coming out, had an interesting demo. Fellow had a high dollar hunting dog he'd just bought a while back as well as one of them fancy collars he wanted to show off. Sent the dog out running through some commands till dog ignored him on one, he hit the shocker, dog took off in a panic run, we searched for days, never found him. If you train a "No" command proper its all you need, even a new pup will pick up on it in a few tries. Hitting, Shocking, Choke Collars and Pinch Collars are a thing of the past, its actually quicker using the new methods and no chance of "Breaking" the dog. I've seen some messed up dogs in my time from people that thought they could use some pain gizmo to get him when the pup messed up. You can bring a dog back with love but it takes time.

Once again... let me repeat.... I am NOT using a shock collar. I would never use something to cause pain to my dog. It is a collar that uses vibration or high pitch sound only!


I just realized the second collar link uses shocking. I thought it was a vibration/sound collar also. The first one for sure is only vibration/sound.

i've never tried one of those collars so have no advice on them. I trained my guys VERY quickly teaching them "wait" when I open the door. As an extra safety measure, I have a 12 inch gate blocking the front & back doors. It's low enough for me to step over, but high enough to make SURE none of them can get out.

The problem is using noise to correct can make them fear full of loud noises like thunderstorms and stuff. That happened to my yorkie.

Thanks for the advice. I am probably not going to try the collar. She is still pretty young anyway and I know it will take a lot of time to get her to where I want her to be as far as not trying to run out of the house with the door open. She loves to be outside especially now that it is finally warming up here in Wisconsin. I just get really nervous about her getting out and getting hurt.
